So I have been reading James LeMonds excellent book "Deadfall" on logging families in SW Washington and he talks about Weyerhaeuser using GT or Guyless Towers or Grapple yarders for smaller yarding.

Does anyone know if they were using the Skagit GT swing yarders, any pictures?

Thanks!

The guyless tower was the GT-5, it had a jill-poke on the front of the boom, which supported the boom for yarding. I have the brochures, etc. but I'm not going to scan them until I'm sure Contract Logger doesn't have them. Better him scanning, than me! :tong

Looking forward to seeing that. Kind of curious what Weyco runs for yarders in this area these days, if they do at all?

What help do you need? I have the manual for the SJ-4R and RT, if that helps. I know where there is a SJ-4, the old one with mast and partial swing, but it's pretty much junk. There was a later version of the SJ-4, too, the one with a regular rubber mount instead of a truck carrier. Not sure if it's been torched or not. I can check next time I'm in the area.

I have all the books, Thanks. The transmission runs fine in low, however when i shift into high it locks up. I just purchased the machine and havent had time to monkey with it and hoped someone might have experienced the same problem and could give me a head start.

These guys have a SJ4, not sure if it's for sale or not. But it has been sitting for a while near Woodland, WA and these days everything is for sale for the right price. http://www.chiltonlogging.com/equipment/

Thanks, but what i am looking for is the the older machines. I have and will send a picture of it as soon as i am off probation and figure out how, a Machine built around 1956 and was the 51st one off the line. It is a Skagit Model # SJ-4RT-F. I would like to purchase another one in good shape. Hard to find i know but worth the hunt. Thanks for looking!

Skagit BU-739 Yarder on Skagit T-100HD SP Carrier

This one was purchased new by the Ketchikan Pulp Company, and still resides in Alaska today, though the current owner hasnt used her in several years now. This is a nice yarder, and mechanically in excellent shape. She could use a coat of paint.

I hadnt seen this machine lately, and made a trip out there about 3 weeks ago to see if anything had changed..... and it hadn't.

Skagit BU-737 Yarder on Skagit T-90 Trailer

Skagit BU-737 at JM Browning yard in Astoria, Oregon with a cool old truck.

I rounded up some pics I took of this machine in the 1990's when Mike Pihl (yes, Axe Men) owned it. He ran this BU-737 (on a T-90 Trailer) for several years for Longview Fibre around Vernonia, Ore.

First 2 pics taken near Scapoose on Lv Fibre ground.
Last 3 pics were taken at Mike's yard outside Vernonia.

Skagit BU-737 Yarder on Skagit T-100 Trailer

This yarder was purchased and re-painted in 2001 by Parker-Pacific at Buckley, Washington- and I got some quick pics off before they moved it to the woods.

The tower is a T-100, 10' taller on this machine and it has the 7th guyline, as opposed to the T-90 (90' tower, 6-guylines) in the previous post.

Parkers sandblasted the machine prior to painting, and at one point Weyerhaeuser Cosmopolis was considering purchase of this machine, but opted not to because it was percieved that the sandblasting weakened or fatigued the metal.

Aaron Weaver of Cle Ellum owned it for awhile (logging near Hoquiam in 2005) and I lost track of it after that.

Lulay Timber Co.- Skagit BU-737 on T-90 Trailer

In 2003, Lulay Timber (of Scio, Oregon) landed a big job near Timber Junction (West of Portland on Hwy 26). It was a thinning job in nice 2nd growth fir, yarding 2,000 foot corridors inside the standing timber. Corridors were kept down to about 35' wide, with herringbones coming in from both sides at 45 degree angles. Sky car was a big Bowman with lots of dropline --as you can imagine it was needed here!

Couple of things to notice- the gooseneck has been lengthened substantially to work with Lulay's lowbed jeep (far forward kingpin setting), and the tube cradle is adjustable for lower settings on the highway, and higher settings when moving behind the D8 Cat (the tower has to clear the canopy with room for the belly of the guylines).

Also there has been a 7th guyline added above the strawline fairlead on the right hand side. Strange place for this, and it looks like a hydraulic drum maybe off a Madill.

The loading shovel used with this yarder was a Thunderbird 838 on tracks.

Skagit BU-737 on T-100 SP

Here are some shots of a Skagit BU-737 taken near Enumclaw Washington in 1997.

In the 4th and 5th pics, the steer tires have been readied for removal, as a gooseneck must be pinned on and the machine towed (by truck and jeep)over the highway for moving. to get the tube underheight, the front is dropped too low to accomodate the tires.

The pin bosses for the gooseneck are visible. Also, all 4 axles must be pulled from the rear planetaries for highway moves, allowing the rear hubs to freely roll, like a trailer. Then a 2-axle booster must be pinned to the rear.

Machine belonged to Gene Rawson of Rawson Logging at Buckley.

The 'Skagit' and 'BU-737' stickers look cheesy and are obviously not factory....

Skagit BU-737 on T-100 SP at Hofenbredl Logging

In 2002 Larry Hofenbredl of Grande Rhonde Oregon had several sides running, including this Skagit BU-737 on a T-100 Self-Propelled carrier, with 7 guylines. It was a nice machine, and I ran across it often for a year or so, as I was working in the area.

This one is also set up with the cab that slides to either side for the operator.

Had the opportunity several times to slow down and get some decent shots.
