Local 7 Ironworkers and Hallamore Crane Operations Crew reeve the block of a Demag AC 600-ton telescoping crane from left to right with 24 mm CASAR cable and 1,804 feet of line on the main winch.

Working as a team they thread the cable on a brisk April dawn in preparation for a 200-ton trip and lift of a 120 foot long bridge tower section in Chelsea, MA.

Shot exclusively with the Canon 5D DSLR in HD Video with a Canon 17mm lens.

Any particular reason they didnt use the reeving winch? Thats easy..

Many hands make less work ..that cable is a pig to drag around..

24mm rope eh? I'd like to see them set the end fitting on that one. It didn't look like a standard wedge and socket anyway.

No it not your standard wedge and socket..with permission from Demag an operator can use one..

The end on that cable is a cylinder thats pressed on ..

A latch type becket is used ..the cylnder is put in ..the latch is closed the dead end is made..

On the end of that cylinder is a lug that facilitates hooking up the reeving winch ..so that the cable can be pulled through the head ,or out over the Luffing jib ..men hauling on cable is a thing of the past on this crane ..

The AC500/600/700 ...had the advantage over the earlier AC series cranes in this capacity class ..as the reeving winch has free wheel ..the earlier ones only had power down and power up ..though its only a 5/16 or 3/8 rope somebody had to keep tension to get it of the drum ..
new ones mean you can just pull what you need when you need it ..saving time in the setup..

Its quite similar to the " Crosby Button Speltor Socket ,theres no compound its pressed on the cable..
