Perkins Engine

Anyone know the best place to buy a new or reman. Perkins engine? Not sure of the model number but it is around 85hp or so. It is in a 1700cx Scat Trak. Recently had a valve job done on a Scat Trak Skid Steer that has less than 1500 hrs. I bought this new and it has never given me any trouble, it really has been an excellant skidder. Anyway the company that had it in for service said they thought the slight popping sound was a bad valve. They did a complete valve job on it to the tune of $2480 and when we got it back we put just over 3 hours on it and now it is locked up tight. Kind of leary about taking it back to the same company. Not a real believer in coincidence and I know the story I am going to hear if I do take it back, not related to what they did on it, blah, blah, blah. They have not been real receptive on the phone. This is a new shop to me as I recently relocated to CO and I was going to leave this skidder there for general work and cleanup at the lodge we bought. Any suggestions. Thanks, Mark

I think that Scat Trak was purchased by Volvo a few years back, Maybe u could call the Volvo dealer in your area and see what engine is in it ???

How does a diesel with less than 1500 hrs need a valve job, much less lock up? Hmm, that's curious. :beatsme

I had the same thoughts but am not a wrench and went with what the shop told me it neede. Now with it locking up I am less than confident the shop knows what they are doing. Maybe it is not related but it seems very peculiar as I have had no problems with it prior to this. Thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your troubles CANNONMAN1. :Banghead

Thoughts? That's really hard for us to say. May have been an oil pressure issue, may be a clogged oil pump strainer. What type of oil have you been using in the engine?

I have been using Rotella, Use it in most of my diesel stuff and haven't had any problems. My Superduty has 380,000 miles on it using nothing but Rotella. Been happy with it.

Hmm, Rotella should be good enough oil for that engine, don't know what's going on with your lock up, just not enough info for us to guess. I hope you get it sorted out without a great deal of expense to your wallet.

since perkins is now cat you could go there to. i just pulled a 4.4 perkins out of a telehandler that had spun the thrust bearing with 1800 hours on it.

I am thinking that is either a newer or larger Perkins engine than mine. Mine is a 1004.4 I believe. It is 86 HP and that is about what my Telehandler is so maybe they are about the same size. If you don't mind what did it cost to repair your engine. Just trying to get an idea what I may be looking at for costs.

Ask the operator what happened when it happened
Did it make a lot of noise , go bang ? Did slow down then quit ? Was it shut down then not turn over ?
I have not happen to see one need a valve job with so few hrs.
Can You turn engine over by wrench or belts in either direction ? It could have become hydrostaticly locked . Check oil and coolant for immigration- one to the other
With only Three hrs. I would also be thinking about pulling valve covers - it may have lost a valve keeper- which would mean they would be doing some spending

What do you mean by this? Do you mean the camshaft bush? There aren't any thrust bearings in a 4.4, just endfloat collars on the crankshaft, and the locking collar on the camshaft. The phosphor bronze bush supporting the front of the camshaft spinning inside the block is a known issue, but usually when there's a right-side power take off with a heavy loading.

Perkins was never a real good engine, I'd rip it out and stuf a 3.9 Cummins in it and end all the problems. I work on Cat stuff and Cummins has it all over cat in the small engine department.
