The Pacific P16 PreLoad pulling the lowbed in Post #32 is a 1989 ex M&B truck unit # H139 from Franklin River sold to Hayes forest in 2003 and they installed 121 rear diffs and repainted her They sold her off in early 2008 Originally came with KTA 600 but HFS put a C15 in her

TorkelH - I remember driving that road a a young child to get to Tofino - that was before they opened the lower road back in '72. In those days the loaded logging trucks mingled with the innocent public. There was a story of a loaded truck coming along and passing a tourist who had pulled to the side to take a photo of the lake. Unfortunately said tourist left his door open and the afore mentioned truck just drove right on taking the vehicle's door off at the hinges. Near the end of the days of the road's useful life - I imagine this might be in the 70's - I heard of track loader operators being a little reluctant to cross over certain tressles near the top end. They would supposedly bring their loaders to the edge of the tressle, stick it in gear and let it travel across on it's own. The loader would travel happily along, brushing up against the brow logs and make it to the far side. The operators would then give chase and climb onboard and all was good. They didn't trust the tressles. This could be BS but then these are stories from the Sproat Lake oldtimers as told to us young punks.

The story of the bridge sounds totally plausible to me. Ever hear of the Robinson Bridge up the Peninsula in Washington State, from back in the days of steam? They followed that very same procedure to get the log train across the gorge. One of the train crew would wait on the other side of the bridge, catch the train once it cleared the gorge, and bring it to a stop until the rest of the crew walked across the trestle.

Skadill; Great pics - looking forward to see more. A little correction. First 2 pics show KW logging truck - I guess 548 or 552 models from the 40's. Last picture shows a Hayes diesel from 40's - long hood.

box has no tailgate so they welded the extension on the back to keep dryland debris from falling out
