The first delivery was a little over 100mi south of us headed towards Las Vegas. The second and third are a solid 100mi east. We made the news the last time someone drove a haul truck out of Reno.
Do it at stupid o'clock on a Sunday morning like we used to do. Anyone who thought they saw it would've just put it down to too having taken on board too many sherbets.......

This truck was stolen and driven toward California on the interstate in the middle of the day. It was stopped by a low flying overpass on top of Donner Summit. I couldn't find the news article on it. This happened some time ago. Alot of crazy things get moved on the desert but driving haul trucks or any other really large machines to their location is frowned upon. Because of the width the trucks are police escorted from the shop to the location. It's an expensive move.

But if you think about it they are less of a highway obstruction if they are self-propelled (as opposed to being hauled on a lowboy) even though a police escort would still be required. As proved by this image in
the mirror of my pickup from a number of years ago ............

It's laughable-the farmers around here drive combines {minus header-90% of the time} Quad Case IH or Cat rubber band tractors pulling cultivators and what have you right down
the highway with two pilot pickups with beacons you can see from twenty feet away in the dark because they went cheap and bought them from Harbor Freight to alert traffic that their
totally monstrous farm equipment that they brag cost them there youngest child hence {Harbor Freight} is taking up 85% of the road.

We have the same thing here minus the pilot pickups. At night you just assume they are taking up 3/4 of the road just to be on the safe side. I was listening to a farmer complain about cars passing him on the left while he was trying to turn left into a field. All kinds of flashing lights on the tractor and implement and he said he almost hit a car. I said that with all those flashing lights when a farmer puts on his turn signal it really doesn't catch the eye of the other motorists unless they are really paying attention (which we all know is very seldom).

It's bad when you think there's a vehicle coming at you because the rear lights on the tractor are on. On a hwy. you come up on them pretty fast.

Around here they give tickets to equipment traveling on the road with rear work lights on.
When the "work lights" are often all on one switch the only way I could see to get around that is to pull the electrical connections on the rear ones if the operator wants to be able to see where he's going...........

Never been around the really big stuff but everything we run has the headlights and work lights on a separate circuit. Most of the work lights are grouped as well. Turn signals and brakes lights are also fitted to anything with rubber tires designed to be roaded.

Nige you sure you want to go home with the new version of "The Bug" there?

You coming back to assemble a few more of those Lego toys? I could send my 6 year old grandkid down to help! Only problem is he would be trying to mount a boom from one of the excavators on the front of a haul truck to have it load itself!
