Anyone have any ideas on this? How would you go about getting a title for a trailer that was purchased from a manufacturer, but never titled?

I fully understand that just sometimes it’s easier to just tell the dmv it was homemade than going through the issues of trying to get the proper paperwork especially if the manufacturer has no records or no longer exists

Um, I'm not sure that works. If it did, anyone could go steal a trailer and go get a title for it.
Believe it or not, that's exactly how it works in missouri, and in some other states. I've seen what looks like 3 year old factory trailers, titled as homebuilts. Its got to be inspected, by the sheriff or state patrol (which usually weeds out the thieves), but there's all kinds of "homebuilt" titled trailers here.

From the dept of revenue:

Homemade Trailer Inspection Requirements:

If you have constructed your own homemade trailer you will not pay sales tax when you title the unit, but there are special inspection requirements.

Effective August 28, 2019, all homemade trailers, regardless of the length of the trailer, must be inspected by either the Sheriff in your county of residence, or by authorized personnel from the Missouri State Highway Patrol ($25 inspection fee).

  • An Application for Vehicle/Trailer Identification Number Plate or Verification (Form 5062) must be completed at the time of inspection.
To title a homemade trailer in the state of Missouri, the owner must submit the following:

  • A signed Application for Missouri Title and License (Form 108);
  • A completed Application for Vehicle/Trailer Identification Number Plate or Verification (Form 5062);
  • $25.00 inspection fee if the inspection was performed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol;
  • $14.50 title application and processing fees; and
  • $13.50 identification number plate and processing fees.
    • An identification number plate will be issued to you at the time of application for title. This number plate should be affixed to the tongue of the trailer’s frame.

Is there a manufacturer and vin plate on the trailer? VIN's are often stamped into the trailer also, that's what the state boys look for in their "inspection".

Big trucks is what I know. HAZMAT is what I tow.
It can be a nightmare. The previous company I worked for went through a streak where they purchased a number of other companies. When I started auditing the fleet, I found rigs that we didn’t legally own, or had never been titled, or no MCO to be found. Especially with dedicated airport trucks.

Similar here except it can be any police officer not just the sheriff.

The trailer is only 5 years old, was purchased new, but never titled. The sticker is still on it, pristine as the day it was built. Real problem is the certificate of origin is missing.

In most states--if titling/inspecting of a home/shop built trailer of any kind or any
shop built vehicle----It will require receipts of all materials bought to build whatever
is being inspected. And where any used parts came from with receipts. It also shows
proves sales tax paid on said materials. West coast states.

It was sold by a dealer--a vendor of manufacture, once done it's out of manufactures park
other than warranty if one was available when new.

What is ND's laws on the subject? Shouldn't be hard to find.

Looks like they frown on issuing a VIN for something that was manufactured:

Looks like this might be the route to start:

The towing companies also end up with storage/abandoned stuff without paperwork all the time, if you have a buddy in the towing game, they will know the n. dakota ins and outs of dealing with getting yourself down the road to a title.

Thanks for finding that. Looks like it shouldn't be too hard to get it straightened out.
