McCormick Deering Cylinder Hay Loader. John Deere and others, also made them .

The top shelf was adjustable for the back wagon rack.

A team of horses used to pull the wagon and hayloader, then , tractors later.

Then at the barn, Hay forks, much like grapples, were used to hoist the hay into the barn loft. There was a track, at the inside peak of the barn roof rafters, with a small trolley , that had the hay forks attached. A long rope was attached to the horses or tractor, it went clear back to the end of the barn. Then went the hay forks were set, the horses or tractor pulled the rope, the load went straight up, locked into the trolley, then moved the load down the track, a trip rope, allowed the man, on the wagon to trip the load anywhere. Then it was hauled back by the trip load. When it hit the loading end, it released the hay forks and down they would come, like a block and pulley tackle affair.

Very efficient for its day.:) Lots of manual labor though.
