Kim - Post #59 Pic #4 - To me that view clearly shows the tapered C channel flex frame of the 849.

Yes, specifically, a 849S. Like in the 848 model, there was the standard 848, which was narrower and generally lighter all around, than the off-highway model, the 848S. "S" stood for "Special". Here is a 849S, ex J. Borer Trucking.

Thanks for the extra info trakloader.
My observations have been:
848: 10-3/4" Deep C Channel Flex Frame - 34" Width
849: Variable Web Flex Frame - 40" Width
850: Rigid Frame - 40" Width (Similar to HDX, WHDX & P16's)

Maybe you have more info to add?

Tyler; you are rigth. It's 848 or 849. Somebody told me 849 was offered/rebuild with rigid frame but I am not sure if that's correctBorn2clearcut;

(More KW pics - that blue KW dump truck is a bit odd)

Hayesno1,
That blue Kenworth in your photo is the dump truck that we modified in order to haul as much bark/wood waste that would accumulate after sorting the logs on the paved dryland deck. When I dig up my old photos, I'll post them to show you.
It is the WFP Quatsino Dryland Sort located in Port Alice BC. The waste pile would get very large and one guy would drive the truck all day up and down the hill hauling the debree into the "pit". The "pit" was created when they built the dryland sort by blasting rock and dumping into the water to build out the 10 or so acres of flat land in the late seventies. I spent twelve years there and when I started, they hauled debree down into the pit and when I left the pit area was higher than it's original height. Every summer there would be fires in the pit as a result of the compositing action.

The truck was bought used to replace an old Ford 9000 that was worn out and stop using an oversized slip-on bucket for the Cat 980 loaders as it was slow and cumbersome. This KW was solid and with the logs pulled out of the salt water the corrosion would eat away very quickly any any thinner metals. This KW held up well as I remember.
The welder spent some time doing the mods on this KW and I remember after he cut the sides and notched the I beams, we used a Cat 980 front-end loader to bend the box side out. This truck could carry a huge load of debree.
It looks to me like they retired the old girl. Must be parked at Port McNeil?

Once a logger always a logger. I just didn't like the constant "layoffs" everytime the market slowed down. Yah I do miss driving those old girls;) Now I drive a different vehicle.

That truck looks familiar, is it one of the trucks used by the contractors in Port Alice?

By the way 075, who am I speaking to? Send me an email at cbeekman(at)telus(dot)net

MikeKB, Welcome aboard this great site. Thanks for sharing history of old blue KW dump truck. You are right; it was parked at Port McNeil in 2007 when I shot pictures. Sadly I did not see her in 2010. Maybe somebody know her present status?

075; More pics of same truck. Pics were shot at Holberg 2005. It was parked at Saratoga (CR) in 2006. I guess she was parted out?

Hayesno1,
Thanks for the welcome. This is a great site. I enjoy the photos, it brings back alot of memories.
I left WFP in 1999 and went to work at Madill in Nanaimo. I returned to visit WFP in 2006 and alot had changed in the North Island.
I stayed at Madill until 2003 and built alot of 2200 feller bunchers, 2800, 3800 and 4800 log loaders, but got tired of the lengthy "lay offs" and the mismanagement of Madill. It was a sad demise of the Madill product, alot of good mechanics and fabricators lost their jobs. Rumour has it that a former owner has bought up the rights and may start building the 3800's LL again in Victoria. Only time will tell

Don Stone bought the truck new in 1980 .He bought the first truck from western when they started to sell them to the drivers in 1979 in Mahatta River. He first had 04 a 849 Kenworth with an allison, made good money hauling for western during the week and interfore on weekends.Had to sell out when he threatened to shot the manager and they cancelled his contract .The truck then went to Holberg had two different owners there, until the last owner passed away.Had that truck hanging from the front bumper when Don put it over the bank in Mahatta 7220's can lift.
