Hey guys i have an older john deere 690e-lc. Good running machine pretty tight other then some slack in the bucket… I am experiencing some problems with tracking. The tracks will only move if i have the bucket curled all the way in and i have to hold the stick in the curl position for it to move. Also even when i get it to move i cant get the tracks to go opposite and its hard to get it to turn even the slightest bit. Where should i start lookin?

Welcome to HEF deakleman;)!

Machine serial number?

Has this been getting worse slowly over time, or something that just started happening?

Do all the other functions work correctly? Plenty of power and speed?

If you raise a track off the ground, activate that tracks function, will it turn without activating another function? Activate the opposite track (one on the ground), does the track in the air turn?

Two things to check off the top of my head
1- Full pilot pressure getting to the propel spool caps when travel function activated?
2- Brake release pressure?

I'm super rusty with these machines, so maybe @Diesel Dave or @Steve Austin could shed some light on this.

MG has you headed in the right direction on your 690ELC.
Is it better when cold and gets worst as hydraulic oil warms up?
I would advise performing a cycle time test on all functions with hydraulic oil warmed up to spec temperature for test.
I do not have the cycle time test procedure for your 690 and do not remember enough of the specs to give an accurate test.
Maybe MG or Diesel Dave can provide those specs for you.
If you perform test, please report results.

Does the 690 pump and regulator work the same as an 892? If so, the governor (cap) on the pump that runs the regulator could be going bad. On my 892 it was getting worn and you had to bump another function for the pump, corresponding to the correct track. Took quite awhile to track it down.

Sorry guys been busy this weekend. Had to take the radiator out of it and get it patched due to a pin hole. Got it fixed and all the fins cleaned out got it back in the machine and now its overheating water pump is pumping took thermostats out and it dont over hear as quick but still does. Water doesnt appear to be cycling in the radiator.

I have looked all over for the serial number on this rig and i cant find it. Any idea on where it would be?

As far as the controls and tracking goes its the same cold or up to temp.

Have you performed the simple test that MG has suggested by raising one track off the ground and operating the opposite to see if track off ground tries to move? This test will check your rotary manifold seals, they may be blown and letting oil bypass.

It got hotter then normal i guess but i wouldn't say it overheated. I noticed the rad was leaking and shut it down.

After i put it back in and all i flushed the system with water twice and then added antifreeze. Took the water neck off that covers the thermostats and the inside of the engine was pretty clean. Popped of the recirculating hose that comes off the back of the block and goes to the water pump and its pumping water good. I got a mechanic coming tomorrow. I couldnt find any bleeder fittings on the water pump.

As far as the tracking goes if you lift up one side of the machine you still have to hold the lever in the curl position and you have to engage both tracks to move so it will only go straight. When i engage one track the other track will slightly move or act like it wants to move but neither will.

Now that i think about it, it actually was starting to overhear before the radiator blew. I check the hydraulic fluid (added 5 gals) and coolant which was good until the radiator started leaking over course but it was getting warmer then it had been. I have been using to clearing fence rows and had been running it probably 5 hours before it started warming up.

I believe MG has sent you the test procedure for the cycle times, when you get time, please perform this test.
Please provide results for each individual function without operating another function to make one work.

I will have to wait till i get the overheating issues resolvOn the 892 there is a bleed fitting on top of the head, opposite end of the engine from the fan. When filling it with antifreeze you open that and fill until coolant comes out.
Not sure on 690, but on 892 there is a bleeder on top of the head, opposite end of the engine from the fan. If you dont bleed it there, it gets air locked and can damage the head because of no coolant. Have you checked with a temp gun, that it is actually hot? Does it get hot, if just letting the machine idle?

Gotta get a water pump for the machine. Its not flowing enough thinking some fins broke off the impeller. I will get back with you guy as far as the tracking goes once i get this issue resolved thanks guys for the help.

Any input on an affordable water pump or part# would be appreciated. Thanks again.
