cat 943 useing to much engine oil or not??

hi i have a 1990 ish cat 943 and it burns 2 lts a 8hr day is this to much or
not thanks.:confused: dennis

If nothing else is going on and it is burning it it's more than you want see for sure but maybe not enough to overhaul the engine either. Our 943 started life using about a quart a week and got slowly worse until it was using about 4 quarts a day and smoking, then I had it overhauled. That was at 15000 hours so it did well. The early engines only had 3 rings total and would use some oil. Ours did need engine bearings at around 8000 hours. Nothing broke, I just had the bearings checked on advice of my dealer. They were just about worn out at that point.
