I depends on whether you've got a limited slip diff or not, but a quick and dirty check and I can't see a problem. It breaks down into a bevel gear set and an installation kit.

Couple years ago I worked on a few 908Gs and they had that same problem and the reason you had to buy a complete differential was because it was an update to prevent that problem from reoccurring.

As per Cmark's signature line - what's the machine Serial Number..?

According to me 229-5626 is the complete assembly, the differential bevel gear and pinion (only available as a set) is 218-4692 - and it's indicated as "Not Available".

Edit: There is a new design of pinion available for the rear axle differential that appears to be an attempt to cure the issue of stripping splines from the pinion shaft, exactly the same problem you have experienced. That probably explains why the former parts are no longer serviced. To go further requires a Serial Number and whether the rear differential is the open type or limited slip.

CAT 906 Pinnon/DriveShaft Splines stripped

Hi Guys

Just reading your comments there on your issues with the splines stripping. I have encountered the same issue and have been quoted serious dollars by my local CAT dealer for parts....currently it is off the road and in my workshop!
My machine is year of Manufacture 2002 and I have owned it since brand new. I now have 6000hours on it. Should it have been part of a recall if this was a known fault?
Would you guys have a line on cheaper replacement parts but still up to the same standard or better?

What's the Serial number ..........????

The likelihood is that there will be nothing available parts-wise in the aftermarket field for something like a differential.

What Part Number is the Cat dealer quoting you and how much are they asking..?

The former parts are no longer officially available. Why use parts that are known to have a problem when updated ones are available..?

906 Differential Pinion Shaft.png

The new pinion drive shaft is part of new oscillating axles, new differentials and new transfer drives. The new pinion drive shaft and the new differentials are adaptable back to first production for the listed machines. The former oscillating axles and differential groups have been cancelled. When the necessary new parts groups are installed 284-3874 Rebuild Kit must be installed at the same time so that the transfer drive will connect correctly with the new differential.

It's a very common issue. We've repaired it twice on out 908, there were 3+ updates so make sure you get the latest and greatest. Make sure to rebush the trunnions, we had to buy a whole differential assembly and the new drive gear for the drop box as mentioned above. The differential assembly ( not an entire axle assembly) was the only option as the whole unit was updated. Don't forget to order new planetary seals as they need to come off to get the axleshafts out.
