A new feature coming to light on these machines, some are stripping the timing gears. On another forum one bloke is on his 4th engine in 1200 hours.

The 299 seems to be a real problem child for Cat.

Would that be the same Anti-Chatter Additive that they use in brakes.? Can you ask for a part number.?
I suspect it will be 1U-9891.

Yes Nige, it is 1U-9891 fluid.

TBH we put that additive in all hydraulic systems on all new machines at time of assembly and leave it there until the oil is changed at (for us) 2000 operating hours. For a machine the size of a 299 that change would probably be time-based, say 1 year from date of commissioning.

Would the Cat additive be good to put in any hyd. system?

I would only use it on a new or rebuilt system where the components might still be a bit tight, just to reduce/eliminate chatter or vibration. Once the high spots have worn off this eliminating the chatter. At that point it’s a waste of money IMO.
