Mine was the lead auto for ZF in the Ford lines. Splines were too fine on the main shaft Sheared and lost most forward gears, next gen had coarse splines but destroyed the clutch drum hubs, they kept ‘upgrading’ replacement parts until two years ago.

Since the introduction of the 5r110 and the vgt turbo, the no longer developed manuals are a bad idea to buy unless you are towing down the interstate in a 2wd hot shot rig
With the advent of better Class 7 Equipment and fervent DOT Regulation, those days of Ford, Dodge, Ram or any other Ton, Ton and Half Dually without DOT numbers or CDL are nearly over.

Transmissions? Automatics much easier than a manual. This is all off topic though. Need a new thread for this.

Gayle my old partner in the shop and I would both tell people when the question would come up.
{How come you guys don't own diesel pickups being diesel mechanics and running this shop}?
*
The standard reply {I wouldn't have a diesel pickup shoved up my worst enemy's a$$,
I drove the stuff and worked on it most my life--like some quiet time}. Screw those vehicles
have never had a need for one, just more cost when bought and repaired, zero savings in fuel
in most cases it costs more. Now people just think they can't live without them.
*
Saw some jack wagon from some midwestern state saying we need to go back to 1960. Fine,
lets take it all the way back--that means no more things in this century.
*
Everyone can get use to no A/C, no power mirrors, no heated seats, no instant start fuel injection
& coil pack ignition, no back up cameras on anything, no power steering on all, no crash protection,
no seat belts, no air bags, Just lots of sharp things on the dash and wheel to skewer yourself and
others on.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get rid of the frozen food isles in the stores, no ice cream-ice milk, no more deli stuff, Slice your
own bread, meat department full of round steak this round roast that--you couldn't find a new york
or ribeye steak in the case back then.---------------------------------------------------------------------
Clothes--All clothes just like 1960 vintage---no more skimpy outfits for all the women-nothing
but long dresses.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Health care---take all the great modern medicine and out the window it goes, you get nothing
but the best that was available in 1960.
Think about it----1960 sucked,, the average construction worker was accustomed to using
a shovel--all the time---no fancy mini excavators, no CTL's, puny little backhoes,----------------
But there was one real good side effect to that time---There were few FAT people.
*
And last but not least----you can't have computers/social media, just three channels on TV
and all the books you can read, including National Geographic for all the young men
needing sex education. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Those days weren't so wonderful if you lived in those times, Boomers are the last generation
to know what it was like before computers & social media.

Still services the needs it was bought for.

I meant that against People Hate the Truth. All too many of these were Grocery Getters, Soccer Mom Cabs. Bought mine for Function where used to run big Gassers, would only get five to seven years on those, believe got my Moneys worth.

Well got some major stuff done this morning--started at 4 am, nice and cool with a small
breeze blowing through the shop. Best time to work, real early, no phones no people.
Installed front cover, accessory drive and pulley, installed compressor-one that I got a real
good deal on-SS296 Haldex reman for $$250.00. Installed new oil pump, Premco rebuilt
injector pump & match flowed injectors at 12% over. Plus a set of injector lines I built to
feed from front and rear of heads, good thing was I had a factory front line. Full set of
new injector & valve push tubes for this one, ran out of good used. Guy buying it has a
HT60 non waste gate N14 turbo to install. Finish the top end and run overheads tomorrow.

A diesel pickup will keep it's resell value while a gas pickup you can buy an whole engine for the price of the high pressure fuel pump from a diesel.

Well that what I tell people when they are arguing one way or another

One thing about dealing with Premco in Lampasas Tx. is the quality of work plus
the turn around time. Three days there, one day to build and three days back.
That's faster by a whole week over anyone in the northwest. Prime and start up
is quick and smooth with very quick throttle response. Plus no issue sending a
pump that has a different CPL pump code, they will convert it to what ever CPL
you want plus install a new pump code tag that matches CPL.

The deciding factor is rust--rust dictates the value or no value diesel or gas, It's the same
with class eights. Engine might have miles left on it but if it's a Flintstone cab, the value
drops like a rock right along with the zero interest, if the cab is that bad everything else
is just as crusty.

Rich response from someone rebuilding 50 year old engines that were obsolete 40 years ago.

Diesel in a pickup for most is stupid, especially now, with DPF and all that crap. And no reason to use any pickup as a go to the store vehicle, I sure wouldn't. They are tops for theft as well.
4 am? Thats bed time for a graveyard shifter.

Junkyard and I have discussed this premise. These guys are Undauntable, reuse nearly everything and get engines back to work or rebuild old trucks On The Cheap!!! Could rectify all the Super High Costs endured by the general Lil Debbie Cakes and Energy Drink swilling Super Truckers that need more cash for their necessities!!!
