Recently picked this up with a few issues when I got it to resolve. Wondering if any of you have a good source for understanding a few things that are wrong and where to start...

1. Dump wont dump because it is a clutch pump and the clutch part is bad. I ordered a new one from Muncie for this today. The wiring was totally fried to this so have to wire up a switch again and set this up. Wondering how the dump itself works once that is working. There is a lever in the cab but it doesn't budge right now so does it have to have the pump running to be able to use that manual lever to get it to move? (The people it came from originally it was a city plow truck and had a salter and they didn't use the dump bed.)

2. Speedometer/odometer goes in and out. Worked for the guy I got it from but he didn't know much about it and it was an auction truck. For me I basically drove it home and that was all so far and it worked for for a second but then stopped. ABS light is also on. Are they related or totally unrelated to each other? Sensor? Wire somewhere? Where to I start knowing it is intermittent like that and works sometimes. The guy I got it from said he drove it from VA to UT and it worked the whole way just fine.

Anything on this would be helpful. Just trying to figure all the wiring out from the fried wiring and what some of it is and trying to clean it up so we can use it on our jobs to haul instead of using our dump trailers so much.

Ran when last parked
Mechanics Special
Worked when I last used it.
I never had a problem there
Well maintained low miles

Seriously city plow truck is one red flag, use to be used in salting the roads is another, I can only imagine what the frame looks like with any of the drive train. This truck sound Fked 9 ways from Sunday!
But what do I know I don't turn wrenches everyday like most in here, I don't work for anyone or own a business dealing with trucks, just a bumpkin out in the high desert so take my advice with a grain of salt, or a truckload that truck did.

Truck runs fine and starts right up and only has 57k miles on it. I don’t need it to be pretty or last super long and I’d mostly be using it for short trips of like a mile or less to move material around and to plow a parking lot since it came with the plow which works fine also.

I just need the dump bed to work. I talked to Muncie and they were helpful and I tested the clutch pump and it was bad like they said so we got one of those coming. I think they had wired it up wrong to begin with using too small of wires and they had rubbed on metal where they were routed under the dash through part of the dash frame so that may be all that is.

Wish me luck and if anyone has more suggestions please let me know.

Big trucks is what I know. HAZMAT is what I tow.
“A salter”. :)
Everything will the seized and corroded in place.

Jake, I would have a annual vehicle inspection done by a competent person before spending any more time and moneys. The frame is going to be so rust-jacked that it won’t pass an inspection.

Or, it’s a one- owner cream puff. IDK?

Welcome to the HEF. BTW. If you are still interested in hanging out with us, tell us something about your operation. Then post some pictures of your cream puff for us to scrutinize.

Sometimes the dump levers have a button on the top the of knob that you have to push that keeps the lever from moving accidentally. But, if the lever hadn't been moved in years it is possible that it is rusted solid. Post some pictures when you get a chance.

On my 02 550, the speedometer and odometer do use the same wheel speed sensors that the ABS system uses. So if one or more sensors are bad, that could be causing both problems. Does the truck have an OBD2 port? You may be able to pull codes to narrow down which sensor (s) are bad.

When rewiring the pump clutch, use a relay in the system so the switch doesn’t do the heavier amperage. The switch will last longer.

Got the dump bed working and the pump and switches. The clutch pump had a part inside of the pump that was missing and the dump bed itself was stuck but once we got it going it is now working good. The lever issue was a lock in the middle of the lever that wasn’t pushing in but now works fine also. Took a bit of work figuring it all out but seems good to go now. And it was inspected regularly as a city truck with lots of records of everything. Need to replace a couple grease zerks but otherwise seems good. Replaced the exterior lights with LED lights and they are also working good now.

Glad your getting it sorted out. I've run trucks for salting and as the guys mentioned it raises havoc with them. I'd recommend you hose it down extensively with water in all the nooks and crannies to get rid of any residual salt. And Fluid Film will be your best friend!
