    Basic Grading Questions

I have been working with a 16H, and at times an older 16G, at the mine and have a few questions. My basic training is only so good as our roads are pounded out by the 1.1 million pound trucks. Finesse is something you have to look into on your own time. 1. My basic understanding is for a...

    Cat 854

Our new 854K Wheel Dozer just got released yesterday. We were debating whether the push arms, tilt cylinders and/or blade were interchangeable with a D9 or D10. They look identical. Anyone know? What a machine. I have not had a change to get a picture of it yet. The new Cat controls for...

Thats the Girlfriend ladder. On a machine that big you need two means of egress. Especially when a truck and shovel "swap paint". Usually the first victim is the ladder on that side.

What are your haul trucks rated for?

We use BCM's for our Waste Production ratings based on the Shovel/Loader's Pay Scale. Depends on the drive-type. Our Komatsu's (830e and 930e) are 240 ton and 310 ton respectively. They are Wheel Motor trucks (electric drive) and are loaded based on volume limits. Somewhat similar to what...

Your first piece of equipment owned or operated was?

Cat 988B Loader converted into a Power Cable reeler. Spent over 50,000 hours as a Production Loader, was converted into a rubber tire (the worst of fates for a piece of equipment at a mine) and then still had gumption and was converted into a Cable Reeler. No A/C, no Fan, heat was off or...

Nice Pix! Single Stack/Filter on the old 10's eh. What year would that N be? Any Cab shots?

    Ripper Balance

I have heard conflicting things on "balancing" a Dozer with the use of the Ripper. Mainly: 1) Ripper (SS) all the way up, pitched all the way in. 2) Ripper all the way up, pitched so the top of the shank (err, holder?) is level with the ground. Puts the tooth just in front of the penetrating...

Ha ha ha. Yeah thats a mine truck. 3 months and 60,000 km's and they are shot. Full PM every two weeks. They run more or less non-stop for 3-4 shifts at at time.

I can't get over how clean it is! We bought a Hitachi from Noah and this thing was just a walking lube station. Used to leak over 400 litres of Hydraulic fluid a shift.

I was actually on our hoist rope crew for awhile. The standard budget is 1200 hours. In actuality it varies considerably depending on the digging the Shovel's in. In well-blasted Shale we can usually get close to 1500 hours. In Rehandle, especially in the winter with frost chunks the size of...

    Goofball Greenhorn

Definitely part of the fun of "learning by fire". The city your buddy worked in (I use "city" loosely) would be Elkford. You would be amazed at how training works at the big mines. The most training guy gets is his first two sets on the Haul Trucks. You start on the Komatsu 930's (310 ton...

    Goofball Greenhorn

Made my first big newbie gaffe last night. Production machines were all parked for a Shut-Down so we were just doing pit maintenance. Most guys slept or watched movies but Keener-me wanted practice. It takes way too long to rattle in and back out of the pit so the common practice is to just...

27 Air Filters for the House Blower Motors. Middle picture is of the Boom, Point Sheave's and back of the Sticks. Third is a buddy at the top of the Sheave's - 60' up. When we change the Hoist Ropes the new guy has to shimmy up the Boom to flip the Tugger Cables onto the outside Sheaves.
