Will a hydraulic cylinder drift when piston seal is leaky?

I'm going with yes it will drift. The cylinder on our ditching bucket would drift off to one side all the time. Even with the machine turned off and the pressure relieved. Based on past troubles we checked the piston seal and found it was bad.

New and soon to be Jobless

Hey Tick, I'm currently at Fleming for the mechanics coures. I live with a few of the operators and they seem to love it. They put you in pairs and the two of you switch back and forth on the machines digging basements, trenches...etc. I think I even saw them out there surveying one day...

    Parking a Machine

I was kinda leaning towards yes..just for safety reasons, a hose blows and without them youd be in a whole lot of trouble quick. Thanks for the info Atco!

    Parking a Machine

That and we park our lifts up just to save space. Each cylinder has a releif valve right on it, but I dont think they have check valves...will have to ask the lift tech tommorow.

    question for the h.e. techs!

Personally I think if you use it carefully and only as a last resort it can get you out of some cold situations....but if it is abused it can cause some serious damage. I think the real danger of it is that its burning uncontrollably(is that even a word) if there is too much put in...(somebody...

Nice. I went to Fleming for the technicians course, I'm from Kingston though. I'm an apprentice tech not an operator but had similar troubles finding work..and started out as the gopher(spelling) around the shop...now I have my own work space. I work for CRS, a rental company. Good luck!

    new job-starting out, Advice?

Can't agree more wih what these guys have said. First impressions mean everything. I was in a similar situation for a couple months...I called guys back I hadn't heard from in a week or so and finally one company bit. Hours and oil change

lol I've seen gas in the diesel tank a few times...not just at this rental company either(you would think the diesel only sticker woud have been a good hint :Pointhead) It does seem that rental equipment has a shorter life span. I think your service manual should tell you something like...

Where I was working we did 250 hours on the skidsteer and all the other machines. I work for a rental company now and we do every 100 :eek:but thats the extreme side..(we all know how well rental stuff is taken care of).
