We had to pull start them because they have pony issues, of course, but I have that covered ... I think ... one never knows until you pull bolts and break out the mic. Not sure...

Hydraulics, tigers and bears Oh My!

Pulled the Hydraulic filter on the 955E and it had collapsed. I pulled it apart the filter and found no visible sparkles but it was quit plugged with dirt and a lot of seed from cottonwood and fireweed and seemed to be little to no rust (signs of water damage)

    Question about Cat bolts?

I have been cleaning, chasing and painting bolts, nuts and washers for awhile now; I was wondering how much of the 21,480lbs of my 1957, Caterpillar 955C weight is actually bolts, nuts and washers because there is a ton of them, sorry excuse the pun.

The cheap Chinese tools what else do they bring?

I went to buy a cam-over stud puller in town. What once use to be a common tool is now called a specialty tool. Drove all over several towns only to finally break down and go the the China store; every town has one like Harbor Freight or Globmaster. Talking to the salesperson I realized the...

    Manuals

Manuals are THE most important tool you can buy for your equipment, and yet people balk at spending a few bucks at the price of a good manual. I'm the first to admit, I did, but I learned especially on Caterpillar manuals are a tool as much as the 9/16 open end. Compared to manuals how much have...

    How tight? Fuel transfer pumps

How tight/hard are the fuel transfer pump shafts suppose to spin? The one on the 57, 955C, 12A03563 is tight - not a seized tight but more like a tight rubber seal. Could it be dried out seal? Had old fuel inside. My concern is a seal too tight will wear a grove in the shaft. Feels like the old...

    Flywheel on D315 question

I'm working on the 955C 12A-03563. I pulled engine out and removed the wet clutches pressure plates and flywheel everything looks good so far but the flywheel has quit the wear on the ring-gear - 1/4" ground. I know on other types of equipment you can turn the ring-gear over and reuse them...

Strategies on troubleshooting the 955E D315

OK I got the skinny on the 1960, 955E 12A08263 (8263) Traxcavator of how it died. If it were a gas engine I'd be all over it and I can turn wrenches wit the best of them. Though I have been around diesel equipment and drove diesel trucks all my life dose not make one a diesel mechanic - just...
