Detroit 6-71 that sits a lot

I live aboard a 1959 gmc PD-4101, an old highway bus. It's powered by a Detroit 6-71 and although the bus is roadworthy, I only take it out once a year or less. I am wondering if there is something I should be doing to keep the engine in as good of a condition as possible. Should I start it and...

    IH3400A hydraulic hose length

I have an IH3400A and I am looking at replacing a couple hydraulic hoses. The hose in my hand seems like it is too long for its job and is rubbing against the spline block. The hose that is to the far right of this long hose goes to the same ram via the same route. Is it likely that this long...

    International 3400A Backhoe - Repairs

I need to change the clutch i my machine one of these days and so far I have only looked at it and it looks awful. I see the two mounts in the front but no others. Do I simply unbolt the mounts in the front, tilt the engine/trans up, support the trans, then slide the motor forward? (simply? HA!)

    IH3400a Outriggers not holding

Hey everybody, On my olde 3400A the outriggers are no longer holding. They drop fine and lift the machine but after a few minutes I notice that I have fallen back down again. Also the boom (or is that the dipper? the first arm connected to the machine) drops slowly as I drive around. The boom...

    IH 3500a wont move

Somewhere on this site a guy called 'Skyking' has post regarding which clutch he used from a Napa auto parts using the Napa numbers.

    IH 3500a wont move

On my machine the clutch appears to be a direct lever from the pedal. I have the floor out of mine right now and can see all the linkages from the pedal to the arm on the side of the transmission and there are no hydraulics visible. I have the same stick/ shifter configuration as you.

    IH 3500a wont move

I have a 3400a with what seems like the same problem excepting that engine RPM does not matter. When the machine is cold I can climb hills and after it gets hot I lose reverse and all hill climbing ability. My neighbour (an industrial equipment mechanic) tells me that it is the clutch. One other...

    MCV Pump 3400A

Also, although it is likely to cause me an ulcer thinking about it, what is the MCV?

    MCV Pump 3400A

It doesn't seem to matter if I have a load or if the bucket is up or down. One moment the steering is bad enough to make me think that the machine has serious problems and then a few minutes later it works fine and I just put my head back in the proverbial sand and forget all about it. Losing...

    MCV Pump 3400A

No help from me but I have the same sort of problem in my 3400a. Sometimes the steering only needs one finger on the wheel, sometimes it needs both arms and a leg.

    Hydraulic fitting turns too far.

Thanks for the help and advice.

    Hydraulic fitting turns too far.

It is an early seventies IH 3400a. Thai picture solved the mystery. There was so much crap and rust that it looked like a single solid piece.

    Hydraulic fitting turns too far.

Sorry I don't have any pictures at the moment so this may be confusing. At some time in the past the 90 degree fitting on the boom of my backhoe was turned too far. This fitting eventually leads to the ram that controls my bucket. On one side of the machine the fitting points downward and the...

    IH 3400A pressure in transmission/transaxle

I ran a rag breather yesterday while I moved some manure around the farm here and removing the old breather seems to have completely solved the leak. Of course all that poking around has led to the discovery of even more leaks but I don't believe that they are related to this breather issue.

    IH 3400A pressure in transmission/transaxle

I can't take apart this breather without destroying it (if it's even the right one). I'll just run without it (using a rag ) and see what happens. If it solves my problems them I'll replace the breather. If there is no change, I'll put this one back.

    IH 3400A pressure in transmission/transaxle

Sounds like a plan to me. Can you think of any possible reason why the case might require some small amount of pressure in it? (before I put on a breather that flows easily in both directions) And if I can't get a replacement this weekend, do you foresee any problems with using a clean rag as...
