    Sadly nothing like the Deltics. We converted it into a pleasure boat and ended up installing a pair of Detroit 8V71's that could make her go a maximum of 13 knots. A big drop from the 45-50knots when the Deltics were installed. On the flip side, a substantially lower diesel consumption rate.

    They were a magnificent piece of engineering, but very temperamental. We bought a decommissioned PT from the Norwegian Navy in 1987 and declined the offer of the Deltics as they could be problematic they could guzzle a fair amount of diesel.

    It sure is. That's a 3,200HP turbo charged Deltic that was installed on the second batch of Nasty class PT's and also the Tjeld class of the Royal Norwegian Navy.

    You'd get better fuel consumption with a Volvo. The parts would be in the same ballpark cost wise as a Cat. The Volvo's have nice cabs and are a nice machine to operate from experience.

    Buying new in our scenario is out of the question, the local interest rate for lending is around 16-17% and a shocking 26% in neighbouring Ghana :(

    Haha :D I've seen plenty in Wales over the years when going back to visit my mum. They seem very fond of Doosans and Bell ADT's.

    Ah right. We just happen to know an Irish fella who used them a lot in Ghana stripping overburden and loading A40E's. He said they ran well and were good machines.

    I just happen to know several people who own/operate them and the feedback is quite encouraging. If it were a matter of buying used, I'd go with a Cat 350. We passed one up several years back in favour of a newer EX455 and were we sorry...

    If I had the option to buy new in that size range and had a dealership within easy reach, I'd go for a Doosan DX490LC-5 or DX53LC-5 (49 and 52 tonnes respectively). I'm not sure on the fuel consumption rates, but apparently the new Scania Dc13 installed on them is very fuel efficient.

    I found a company in Turkey that offers trailers with more realistic (and believable) specs than the Chinese. They can offer trailers that can take a payload of up to 125 tons based on a 7 axle configuration. Roughly 18 tons per axle using 12-R22.5 tyres.

    Handy for transporting plant around a job site. Hardly ideal for on-highway transport. I just cringe imagining the level of extortion that would take place when the African police flag you down at a checkpoint...
