    Historic NZ Earthmoving Projects

Hi, Thought I would add a bit more to this thread to keep it going. Firstly, a link to some more photos from the Twizel era - Twizel Photos Then, some photos from the construction of the Wairoa Dam near Auckland in the early 1970's showing Downers equipment, which suprisingly included a...

    Wabco scrapers at work

Brenlow, a copy of the ad below. Looks like it may have been a bit earlier on than the mid 70's. Also, a link to an aerial shot of the SWE under construction. Recognise the landscape at all? http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/7722/swe01fs.jpg Regards Mr Euclid

    Historic NZ Earthmoving Projects

Hi John, yes you may be correct with the 631's not belonging to JR Bishop. For whatever reason I always thought they were but after thinking about I don't recall seeing it in writing any where. Must have been one of the other contractors working at Benmore at the time. Thanks Mr Euclid

    Historic NZ Earthmoving Projects

Ray, this is a great subject for a thread. I wonder how many years it took to shift the 3,000,000 yards on the Murupara project given the size of the fleets and equipment? I think I have a copy of the same Benmore booklet that some of your scans are from. Attached below is another page from...

    Wabco scrapers at work

Thanks for the reply Brenlow. I just found an old IH ad from the 70's showing International scrapers working on the South Western Expressway - Gemell & Hickey with 3 x 295's, HH Watson with 5 x 295's and a TD25, PT Stevens with 2 x E270's and a TD25 and Fleet Plant Hire with 2 x E270's. With all...

    Wabco scrapers at work

Brenlow, these are great clips and it's much appreciated that you have taken the time to convert and upload them. Was there a specific reason elevators where so popular on this job and in general in Australia at the time? Did the price of fuel or the cost of the scraper units have anything to...

    One Day, 53 years ago

Hi, Would the photo of the 16TDT and crowd be taken at a golf course in the Wellington area? There was a picture in the book on the history of Clyde Engineering that has a very similar look and is of a Dryden scraper on a golf course and the caption mentioned it was the first 16TDT in NZ...

    IH295s

4 x 295 scrapers and 5 x Payhaulers! Looks like one of the largest earthmoving fleets in NZ is in sitting in that field! Thanks for the additional photos and I am sure there is an interesting story behind them all as well. Keep em coming!

    IH295s

Nice Photos Malcom. By the looks of things there are 3 or 4 lying about as well as a Payhauler or two in the background. Are these ex Bakers by any chance? Regards Mr Euclid

    IH2T55 scraper

MOW 495 Scrapers Yes my records indicate 15no. as well. Picture attached is the only one I could find and shows a few of them climbing the dam ramp at Benmore. You can tell that they must be old as they all came in the red paint scheme that IH used in the early days. Cheers

    IH2T55 scraper

Assuming their wasn't anymore imported into NZ, which is pretty likely, I think a few even made it to the late 70's/early 80's as I recall seeing one in Baker Constructions livery working on the Clyde Dam. Will see if i can find a picture or two of them at Benmore. Cheers

    Mangla Dam

No, just 'Mangla Dam'. There are also a few pictures of the Trinity Dam project that Guy F Atkinson built in the 60's in California and a few more of MK's causeway across the Great Salt Lake in Utah.

    Mangla Dam

Life magazine have teamed up with Google to put up nearly 2 million images online - http://images.google.com/hosted/life. I was looking through them and found these great images of the equipment at work on the Mangla Dam project in Pakistan in the 60's -...

A few more pictures of 666's. These are all in California and I think they were owned by Independent Construction. These are not my photos I got them awhile ago from the photo galleries on the DHS Diecast site.
