    Battery

Dirt on top of batteries often gets some acid in it and it can discharge the batteries in a few days. Keeping the tops of batteries clean and dry is a good idea. A charging system that is over-charging will greatly shorten battery life. A dragging starter that pulls very high current is hard on...

    Labor$$$ to replace undercarriage

A can of worms indeed. He probably needs to put some sweat equity into that machine if he wants to save it.

I think Cat still has the big flanged gearbox plugs with the square or hex socket.

    1959 cat d4 7u questions

I have a D4 6U, # 4774.... love it. It had a good deal of water in the transmission. I let it drain overnight and flushed it with diesel and it seems to be fine.

    Ideal grouser shoe width

I'm not an expert, but I'd think for pond cleanout and work in sand the wider pads would be a good choice. If you have a lot of larger rocks, it might be best to look for the standard pads. Adding weight to the machine would tend to improve traction on hard ground.

Case 850 with bent rollerframe axle

Is the damage limited to the dead axle, or is the track frame twisted? Or both?

    AMP gauge connection D4

My '73 D 7F/ 3306 shows discharge when glowplugs are on and before cranking. It shows -30 amps when the batteries are up good and a little less if they are not fully charged. It's a 24 v system. You need good heavy wire supplying the start/heat switch, and on to the glow plugs and also a good...

    Track Cleaning Tool

You might cut the bar in two in the middle and weld each half to a four foot piece of 1" pipe to get better reach. Put a coupling in the pipe about a foot from the end with the bar in case you need to shorten it temporarily. You could cap the end of the pipe for safety and to use it as a rammer.

    D-7 Alternator

I hooked a 12 V tail light bulb between the F terminal and the other (small) terminal that the 2 wires from the regulator connect to. The bulb lights up and the alternator appears to charge normally. At low engine speeds, the bulb dims and at higher speeds it gets bright. This suggests to me that...

John Deere 450G crankshaft seal replacement

Be sure it's a seal problem first. Be sure oil level is correct (correct dipstick) and that all crankcase breather devices are working properly. If the crank pulley has a bolt to secure it, look for any evidence of looseness. While it probably is a seal, you may get lucky.

    D-7 Alternator

I'll try hooking battery voltage to the field terminal through a resistor and see if it charges.

    D-7 Alternator

I'm pretty sure it quit working again. I can turn on the glow plugs and crank it with the fuel shut off to load the batteries, and then start it, and it still acts like it did before I replaced the regulator. When it's working, it's very obvious.

    D-7 Alternator

I have a D 7 F with a prestolite alternator. The ammeter works fine, and the machine has no accessories other than the starter. It's never shown to be charging much, if any. Once in a while I have had to charge the batteries. I put a new regulator on it about 25 hours ago, and the alternator...

    D6C LGP overheating

The impeller blades looks like they've been riding on the water pump housing face. There should be at least a small gap there. Is it possible that the shaft is loose in the drive pulley or bearings or missing spacer/thrust washers so as to allow it to ride on the pump housing? How tall are the...

    350B engine and drivetrain rebuild

I'd certainly replace that input shaft. The yoke that fits on that worn spline will also need replaced. Any other visibly worn or damaged shafts and yokes in the driveline will also need replaced or you will have ongoing problems with u-joints, seals, bearings, etc. Good used parts ought to be...

How much power loss can bad compression really cause ?

Be sure to check all crankcase vent points, filters, etc. Any restriction will cause problems, especially in an engine with high hours.
