bought a 920 cat, engine seized 20 min later.

    Love reading your threads. I've got a '74 f250 highboy with a 12v cummins and a 920 loader!

Pony motor issue all over again.

It might be worth it to send out your mag to have it looked at/freshened up. I can't remember the name of the place, but the guys over on ACMOC will definitely be able to steer you in the right direction, and maybe have some other advice we haven't thought of.

Pony motor issue all over again.

No worries guys. There are "pony guys" and "direct-start" guys, and that is ok. Whatever works for you. It was simple for me to grab a used 40mt starter from the junkyard, grab (2) group 31's and fab up a battery box. Again, not a huge investment compared with rebuilding all that fails on...

Pony motor issue all over again.

I understood mine well enough to know it belonged in a scrap tub. Sorry if I offended you. I know all about the pre-heating, using it to move the machine, etc. To each his own. My 9U is direct electric and I wouldn't look back...even in the western NY winters. If the pony were mine, I'd...

Pony motor issue all over again.

On direct electric start, mine only starts unaided on the warmest summer day. However, with a small shot of starting fluid, it takes off immediately in any conditions. I bet yours will surprise you too!

Pony motor issue all over again.

Ask yourself how important it is to you to retain the original integrity of the tractor. The single best change I ever made to an early Cat dozer was to scrap the pony motor and convert to direct electric start. Cat built amazing equipment back in those days, and then started them with washing...

Pony motor only fires one at a time

Agreed. You've got a magneto issue. I'll bet the problem is in there.

    International T444E issue

Not sure if this helps you at all or not, but.....mine is very touchy for some reason about what ipr is installed. I bought a new one (preventative maintenance- or so I thought), and it ran terribly. Could not figure out what I had done wrong. Installed the old ipr, and everything was fine.

Should I start this business with my brother?

Manuals are very expensive, and most machines require multiple manuals. Without a VERY extensive library to start with, I don't see how it can be any more effective than your typical backyard mechanic advice that your older neighbor/grandpa/cousin's uncle's friend gives you.

Should I start this business with my brother?

How will the "mechanics" have access to all the needed manuals/part numbers etc. for every specific machine???

Dovetail truck bed for hauling skid steer?

Now its the month long course and cost though!

Dovetail truck bed for hauling skid steer?

I've been giving this serious consideration as well. I have (2) international 4700 single axle dumps, a 6500lb. skid steer, and a 5 ton excavator. I really hate to open the whole CDL can of worms, but if my thinking is correct this could provide a good way to move my equipment on my own...

    Caterpillar D69U

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the oil clutch became standard at 9U13263. That would mean that this one actually came fitted with the oil clutch.

    Caterpillar D69U

Rails and sprockets look excellent. Should be a lot of time left in that old dozer.

    Caterpillar D69U

Looked again at your pics, and it looks like the pony engine has been removed. I would say it is a '53 or '54 model. Someone (Old Magnet) will know for sure. It really doesn't matter though as all Caterpillar parts are ordered by serial number and not model year. Hope this helps.

    Caterpillar D69U

Yes, that is an oil clutch 9U- good thing. I converted my dry clutch to an oil clutch and it makes a big difference. That is a "1" not a "4" as the final 9U serial numbers were in the 23,000's. Hopefully it is direct electric start, and not pony motor start. People who like authenticity...

    Caterpillar D69U

An oil clutch machine has a filler and dipstick on the right side at the back of the engine in the bellhousing area. Dry clutch will not have these. Oil Clutch became effective at serial number 9u13263

    Caterpillar D69U

I agree, it is a clean machine for its age. There is a lot of adjustment left on track chains which (usually) indicates a lot of life left in the undercarriage. However, it is all speculation without proper measurements. Track pads have significant wear. If it’s an oil clutch machine with a...
