Air brake system leak detection question.

I've had some air tanks get a a hairline crack right around the mounting bracket that is hard to see. The tank looked solid otherwise. I pulled the tank off, ground out the crack, welded, then plugged the extra holes in the tank, installed a ball valve and shot it full of shop air and checked...

The day that you don't learn something new, is a truly wasted day!!!

Hurt by skidsteer and close calls.

I was running a 5130 cat shovel loading dirt onto a mixture of 777's, 789's, and 190 Euclids. Walked up to the dig face to start my next pass and noticed a root ball sitting on the edge. I was planning on as soon as I could reach it, pulling it down to where I could work with it at ground level...

    Cylinder head bolt

I've seen it done pretty much the same as above, but with a stick welder. As soon as it went back from red to that nice grey color, it was given a thorough hammering with a air chisel. If it wasn't so hot I could've backed it out by hand. Seems the vibration helped to loosen all the crud in the...

" If it wants Off , Let it off "

We load everything over the side of our lowboy. If you can stand to watch this jerky video, looks like a 11 getting loaded up at the end of it. It's not my video, just passing it along. http://youtu.be/utLv4350DI8

" If it wants Off , Let it off "

Right or wrong, we move everything from our D-7 to our 11's, 5130's,1800, and drills without tying them down. Even going across a state highway

    Would You Haul it ??

Fastdirt, I agree it's not secure enough for me to haul, but for some unexplainable reason, I really like the truck and trailer set up..... You can call me crazy, I don't mind

    Hitachi ex 3500-3

I run a 3500,hence the name, and I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a direct fit am/fm radio with a mp3 jack available for a machine that is as old as this one? I sometimes have a hard time getting a clear signal from my Xm to the radio and it would be nice to be able to plug the Xm...

    Rookie questions

I tend to agree with all that you guys have said. I don't feel like they are doing things properly, but I don't have enough experience to know for sure who's right and who's wrong. I guess I will keep my mouth shut about the issue at work, and run it how I see fit on the rare occasion that I do...

    Clearing driveway and building site

A good experienced operator, with a eye for the big picture, can at times do multiple things at once. If that makes sense. What I am trying to say is if someone has the overall layout of the finished property, he may be able to move more or less from one spot or another, and end up with the same...

    Rookie questions

Thanks for the input guys!!! I can understand running with some tip in the moldboard. But what I am saying is theses guys are running with it rolled as far over as it can possibly go.

    job site fun

Take a antifreeze jug, make a hole in the lid just large enough to insert a piece of vaccum line, rig a ball gave to your air hose and the other side to the vaccum line. Barely crack the ball valve and lay it in the shop floor and walk away. By the time it blows up you are long gone

    Rookie questions

Normally our roads have the appearance of a asphalt road. They are compacted way beyond anything that a grader could add to. I understand that with the blade rolled over it's not going to cut as much and at times it may be called for. But would one approach a haul road that is compacted to heck...

    some work pictures

I have sat and read this whole thing this afternoon. I am convinced I am not worthy to drag up this mans leads!!!! You do amazing work sir!!!!! Looking at your bucket repairs made me think of a story I heard at work. They sent a guy to cut the shank off a bucket, either a 1100 or a 1800...

    Rookie questions

Our roads are all built out of rock. We are running 789B's and R190's so the roads take a pretty good beating. My thoughts are that you would want to cut some to carry across to fill any bad places in the road.

Never say you'll work on anything.. unless you are ready to back it up.

My worst one was a dump trailer that once a week went to a fish processing facility to haul off the unusables. Welding on that bad boy in August was a real treat. Btw it was a aluminum trailer

anybody know much about these hidden gems??

My grandpa had a love affair for the old Detroits. Seems everything we had had one of one series or another. I know he had some old Letourneau(sp) diesel electric scrapers with 6-71's, a 2 HD-19's with them, a wabco diesel electric and who knows what else. He also had a 222 Wabco that had a...

    Rookie questions

Hey all!! I am not gonna try and pretend that I am a grader guy, but have been around one enough to be dangerous on one. A lil background, I grew up with my family owning/operating a small excavating business. Due to matters that don't need to be discussed here, I never learned the intricacies...
