Its that time of year. Lets discuss ether.

Last year some dimwit tried to start a 416 Cat backhoe with the ether injection switch, putting ether in the engine w/o cranking it at the same time. Result? Cracked head and I believe one bent rod. I'll occasionally use a little goose juice on my own equipment in cold weather, but I'm cranking...

    Battery

You could also add a Hobbs pressure switch into the ALT circuit. .with the engine off, it disconnects and as soon as the engine builds oil pressure it switches the alternator in. It's the same switch as is used for hour meters. Check with your local NAPA store

    2-71 Detroit will not start.

Post #62 reminded me of many years ago when I was working in a mine in NV. They had an old 315 CFM compressor that had a 3-71 for an engine and in really cold weather, you'd pop an ether capsule in, discharge it and hit the starter. The cantankerous critter would fire and go to rocking back and...

    miller 225D skips

Check your leads first making sure all connectors including where the lead goes into the stinger are tight. Does this happen only on DC or does it also happen when you've switched to AC? Hobart makes a 7018 electrode (E-7018 AC) that works well on AC as well as DC.

Helping a neighbor??? Is it ever worth the effort...

My favorite quote is "Never argue with an idiot, he'll drag you down to his level and win". I'd give 'im his trees back, piled in as much of a mess as I could.

Hardest piece of equipment and favorite

An old grader hand taught me that basically a grader has two levers. .lever A and leaver B. I've seen guys pushing and yanking levers to no end while often it just takes some forethought to make the job easier w/o all the fuss. One thing he told me is something I think over before I start...

Just purchased a D6-9U with low hours, looking for suggestions

After looking at the running gear again, I'd suggest that it might have been replaced sometime in the past. Those pedal have WAY more than 79 hours on 'em.

    104 galion shifter problems

The old Galion I used to run had shifting problems as well, try to go from 1st to reverse and it would just stay in reverse. What I found out is there is a small pin (from memory 1/2" or larger in diameter and about an inch and half long) that was missing in the tower. I don't know what it's...

Just purchased a D6-9U with low hours, looking for suggestions

Overall, it looks like a nice tidy critter that hasn't been beat to death. One of the first things to do is crawl under it and loosen drain plugs on the tranny, steering clutches, finals, engine pan and clutch housing and drain whatever water there is in 'em before you even attempt to start...

can't find serial number on d4d

I won't swear to it but look for a pin that has a dimple in the center, that should be the master pin. I drive 'em out from the outside usually when the master pin is about the middle of the drive sprocket or idler as I can't swing a BFH right handed. For putting the track back together, I use a...

    Cat 3208 engine number question

Cmark has it right about proper care but then that applies to any truck/engine. I've driven an 8 yd dump with the 3208 and it's a tad underpowered in hilly country with a full load. It's not a heavy duty type engine but in a 5 yd dump, should be fine as long as you stay within it's limitations...

    Anyone use water methanol injection?

From memory, back in the late '60's (I think) Pontiac and Oldsmobile had some sort of water injection system on their small turbocharged V8 engines.
