    Help identifying 955L

Here's the parts list from doing cylinders on my 955L 2 years ago. I had aftermarket seal kits on hand, the seals were too small to fit my cylinders so the mechanic matched them up at a local hydraulic shop. I hope these PNs can be crossed to something available to you. This was for 2 tilt...

Need advice on purchase CAT 973 or 983?

The soil is not especially abrasive. This machine has traveled and pushed a lot during it's life, it was purchased for landfill operation, pushed trash, dug trenches, hauled and spread cover. Now we're doing a clean fill site, need to clear trees and handle dump trucks dumping. The 955l is just...

Need advice on purchase CAT 973 or 983?

How long will a new undercarriage last on a 983 with average use? I have an early 955L with the small tracks that wore out it's OEM set in about 3000 hours, and we've been patching it together for another 1000 with new rollers, sprocket segments and removing a link. I need a larger machine for...

Tack welding pads to chain links?

Good ideas. However, I'm laid up w/ a broken neck so my shop manager is going to give it a try tomorrow with the 309 and MIG. We're only welding about 15 pads, and I'm expecting to replace the tracks before any pads need to be removed for any reason so removeability of the welds is secondary...

Tack welding pads to chain links?

I now have 309L .045 wire, want to try this on Saturday. Will C25 shielding gas work OK? Any tips for a guy who can weld but isn't a heavy equipment welder?

Tack welding pads to chain links?

What is modified stainless rod? I'm not familiar with that.

Tack welding pads to chain links?

I was reading up on track bolts here last night and came across a post where someone recommended welding a track pad to it's link when the bolts wouldn't stay tight. Unfortunately I can't find the post now to link to it. I'm in the process of replacing loose bolts in my 955L tracks. There are a...

How to make easy effective site signs?

I need to make signs to direct drivers at a fill site. I want something better than a spray can and a piece of used plywood, but don't need professional street signs made. What have you used for this? Are there good large stencils available? Cheap plastic letters to nail or staple to a board...

Pulls slight right going fwd, dead straight when backing up

Steel tracks? Maybe the left track is worn more than the right.

    Closest Match to JCB Yellow

I take a sample part to my local ACE Hardware store and have them match it in their RustStop Alkyd enamel paint. They can do it while you wait, and I like their paint.

What liftgate for a light-duty shop truck?

That sounds like a tommygate. I have a tommygate liftgate on an F350 box truck. Fairly light, works OK, have never had a problem with it. It would make no interference at all with a trailer hitch, it's all mounted above the level of a hitch. Approx. 1000 lb cap, but how heavy of a gate can you...

    Saved from scrap

Nice get. Just how does someone put the wrong sprockets on a machine?

What equipment uses the same tracks as the 955?

When I was looking, it seemed only D4 links were the same, forget which D4. IIRC, the pitch is 6.75". Edit: Now I think it's 6.91", so ignore this post. I don't have my track manual handy either, have to wait for Nige. Looked online a little, can't find anything.

What is the best hand cleaner you ever used???

Scrubs in a bucket really are that good. So good they make me wonder if they are safe for your skin. Pro Soap is the best stuff I've ever tried, it's even better than Kresto. The ultimate test is the black crap that comes out of a 40 year old Ford flathead, it's worse than working on a 2...

    Rod for hollow hyd ram

Consider Acme threaded rod. It looks like the leadscrew on a lathe or the ram on a bottle jack. McMaster has the rod in B7 and has many types of nuts. http://www.mcmaster.com/#general-purpose-acme-rods/=rwbz8y And yes you can cut the rod no problem. Abrasive wheel or hand hacksaw.

Any more info on this? I googled but got nothing.

    Rod for hollow hyd ram

B7 rod is the approximate equivalent of grade 8. Look at the tensile strength, should be 125,000 psi. McMaster-Carr shows Grade 8 rod, 150K psi - http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-threaded-rods/=rw49vf http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-threaded-rods/=rw48wj I hope one of those links works...

Bolt on cutting edge segments for a 955L

Ah, good ideas all, I should have asked here first. The shop I consulted for a quote about rebuilding the bucket said there was no way to drill the edge, I took his word as knowledgeable - I've never done it. I'd need longer bolts to use washers, too late now with the price of bolts from CAT...
