No bearing in the idler...Surely this can't be right?

Good idea... will do that next time if these bearings fail. So far so good... I have been throwing it round as bit to try and test the bearings and they are still working great. But with murphy's law they probably won't fail until I am in a precarious and remote location...

No bearing in the idler...Surely this can't be right?

well, no luck finding a new idler to fit. I bet there are plenty out there rusting away, but nobody can find one. I tried to fit a slightly larger new one but the extra inch diameter meant about 6 inches extra circumference and I couldn't rejoin the track even at the minimum adjustment...

No bearing in the idler...Surely this can't be right?

Thanks Wisey... you should see some of my other fixes: galvanised pipe to replace a Hydraulic line, number 8 wire to hold the 2 main rams together to stop them from slipping off their pin top shaft.... But I am writing this post to report a stunning development. See photo 2 how the idler...

No bearing in the idler...Surely this can't be right?

Some more photographs... partly so you can wallow in my misfortune but mainly so I can steer my NZ parts dealers to the photographs and situation. But can any of you guys tell by looking at my "good" track whether the axle assembly has blown out in that one too too? It looks good and tight and...

No bearing in the idler...Surely this can't be right?

Thanks for the super quick responses guys... so are you saying there are not bearings on these things? Also, sorry to be stupid, but any advice on how to take it all apart?

No bearing in the idler...Surely this can't be right?

Hi guys, I blew my idler ram seal so I had to take the track off to fix it. But when I pulled the idler assembly off I saw the darndest thing: The idler wheel has been spinning on a raw axle all this time. No bearing. Is this how it should be? I am a real novice but I'm thinking no way Jose...

my digger is acting really weird

Hi, sorry, that's the only schematic I have unfortunately... anyone out there familiar with the JSW BH 40 hydraulics?

my digger is acting really weird

Hi Hendrik, not sure what the suction filter is.... is that a filter where the stuff leaves the hydraulic tank? I do have a user's manual but it's a bit light on details. Most of the solutions offered in the troubleshooting section are "contact your local agent" :) It definitely doesn't...

my digger is acting really weird

Forgot to say, the Hydraulic oil itself was very dirty. I'm going to replace the new filter after a couple more hours... good idea?

my digger is acting really weird

Ok, update: the motor still goes, a lucky escape there I think. I then drained the hydraulic tank and cleaned it out with diesel. It was actually really clean anyway. Then I replaced the filter as suggested, replaced the Hyd oil, topped it up a bit for good measure, and you know what? the...

my digger is acting really weird

Hi hendrik... i don't know the history, but it's been in NZ for at least 15 years. I like your magnet trick and will definitely do that. As it happens I was driving down the hill today to park on the flat where i can do all this fixing and the swing came back in both directions... this was good...

my digger is acting really weird

One last question Hendrik: When you say drain the Hyd oil and run it for a few hours... do you mean run it with no Hyd oil? Should i use the boom etc during this time (forgive my ignorance) to sort of make the crap flow through? And do you literally mean a few hours? That's a long time... I...

my digger is acting really weird

and yeah hendrik, that track was off at the time... probably my greatest macho moment when I put it back on all by myself with nothing but a couple of planks, a rope, and a Mitsubishi Montero. But by the same token, I am such a novice I probably would drive with a track that loose, so don't...

my digger is acting really weird

Hi, A local guy said I may have a blockage in the suction from the tank, but I ignored him because i thought all functions would be impaired, not just the swing... don't bother explaining though, I will do my best to investigate and remedy. As for the filters etc, if that is all it takes to...

my digger is acting really weird

I have this old late 1970's JSW 12 ton digger. It always had swing motor problems, among other problems. See my other thread if you're interested. https://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/showthread.php?21430-help...-my-Excavator-only-swings-in-one-direction I never got to the bottom of that...
