Questions on 1984 International S1700 Dump Truck - engine repairs

This will be interesting... All of my repairs and learning experiences are being done outside on the forest ground about 200 miles from where I normally live. It's on a small mountain home lot where the truck can live for the winter although there may be 10 feet of snow on top of it before...

The knocking increases with a corresponding increase in rpms. Oil pressure seems to be very low at idle but increases with rpms. The oil pressure does not stay consistent.

Questions on 1984 International S1700 Dump Truck - engine repairs

I have a horrible repetitive knocking noise coming from the bottom front of the engine block. The knocking has increased after an engine flush and driving about 300 miles. The gas engine is a 392 CID 6.4L V392LPG IH V8. I suspect a rod bearing is failing. I'm planning on dropping the oil pan...

Questions on 1984 International S1700 Dump Truck - mechanical functions

Technique for shifting the 2 speed axle with 5 speed transmission Let's see if I understand this correctly. The red knob on the stick shift when pushed down sends a signal to the axle to get ready for a shift to low range; when pulled up it sends a signal to the axle to get ready for a shift to...

I've attached pictures of something that appears to be some sort of brake controller. What is this used for? I don't think it is electrical.

Questions on International S1700 Dump Truck - fluids & maintenance

Uh Oh, the transmission may have a hi and low range (red knob on the side of the stick shift) which I haven't quite figured out yet and yesterday I replaced the transmission oil with 80w-90. How bad have I screwed this up? Right now, I'm using the hi range only.

Questions on International S1700 Dump Truck - fluids & maintenance

Thanks. I assume the rear differential and transmission box need to be filled until the fluid runs out of the fill hole.

Questions on International S1700 Dump Truck - fluids & maintenance

I've got some mountain property with tons of dead beetle kill pines so I'll be running stumps to a landfill, bringing in roadbase, moving slash piles, getting the land ready to build on and minimizing fire potential. It has a manual transmission, one speed axle but high and low ranges on the...

Questions on International S1700 Dump Truck - fluids & maintenance

I'm a homeowner with little to none experience with this type of equipment. Picked up a 1984 International with 392 ci Navistar gas engine. I'd like to change all fluids but don't know what is used in some of the items. What fluid is used in the rear differential? the PTO? What is the correct...

    Winter Storage Preparations

Since I'm in learning mode, I tend to have all kinds of questions. Thanks for all the help. Anticipating purchasing a Bobcat S185 or something close to that, what preparations would be prudent if I'm planning to park and store for the winter season? I would be storing outside on level...

    Skid Steer Resale Value

I'm trying to get a handle on reasonable values for used machines by watching all Craig'sList entries from all over the country. From what I've seen, the New England area and the southeast areas of the country are the majority of "for sales" and used skid steer prices seem to be lower than other...

Benefits of a Turbo at Higher Altitudes

Excellent comments from everybody. Hadn't thought about the spark arrestor. I'll be up where the beetle kill pine is everywhere and the last thing I would ever want would be the chance of fire. I will stay with a turbo and wait for a low hours S185 to show up. I think that will be plenty of...

Benefits of a Turbo at Higher Altitudes

It's been advised that I purchase a Turbo such as the Bobcat S185 or 773T for use on mountain property at about 8200 feet or higher above sea level. What are the advantages of the turbo at different altitudes? I'm located in Colorado. Thanks for any info. Gary

Transferring Ownership When Purchasing a Skid Steer

Here is what I've found so far as it relates to looking for liens: All 50 states follow the UCC (Uniform Commercial Code) law to regulate commercial transactions. Article 9 of the UCC allows for a public notice (UCC-1) to be filed in a designated state filing office by dealers or lenders to...

Transferring Ownership When Purchasing a Skid Steer

When I purchase a used machine, what documents should I require from the seller before cash changes hands? How can I check to make sure the machine is not stolen? How do I determine whether the machine is financed or not and if there is a lien attached to it? Are there registration requirements...
