Skagit Iron and Steel Works, Sedro Wooley, Washington

That tower you speak of was a very early Skagit- only about 10 of those were built and sold. I have alot of pictures of that early tower-style but few scanned. This is an earlier machine (roughly 1962) than the one you are talking about and is still on the Skagit steel wheels. The tower and...

Hey that looks great! Late-model Cat boom there- were you hauling for Brower or Pacific? I see HV's ex-Rabey truck there too!

    Kenworth Thread for 848--849--850

OK, That's a different truck. The old SBL #3 is back up and running today as well. It's good to hear you saved one in working order- there are still a few around Southeast!

Aklogging is this the old SBL #3 truck at Deer Bay by chance? If you can tell me which truck you wound up with I'm sure I probably have pics of it I can post for you-

Alaskan Logging Equipment, Left to Rust

It's all good you guys lets just enjoy the pictures together and leave it at that. We're all adults here and while our interests are different (or maybe not that different) I think we're all better than to descend into a scrappping match via our computers and morning coffee. I don't get my...

Alaskan Logging Equipment, Left to Rust

This thread has been a huge hit and I am taking more pictures now that ever. I'll continue to post some but I have to tell you that ordeal with the Ketchikan machines really has really made me rethink the whole thing and I surely do regret giving more information than to describe make, model...

Alaskan Logging Equipment, Left to Rust

Thank you HDX, this is the story everyone here needs to read. http://adventuresinmikeslife.blogspot.com/2011/12/doriston-trucks.html The photos are great, and the story is all too common. Do we need to give all of our history to the Chinese, who are only using it to build weapons? I fear...

Alaskan Logging Equipment, Left to Rust

Give him a Break?? I'd better add some 'back story' for perspective: A friend of mine in Ketchikan had 2 machines stored with permission in an out-of-the-way location (in an abandoned rock pit). Plans were to eventally restore both pieces and as soon as his shop construction was finished, and...

Alaskan Logging Equipment, Left to Rust

You're actually one of the reasons I stopped posting pictures. Fortunately most of it you guys can't get to so it will be safe for awhile anyway.... There are 2 other fellows who have nailed a few peices as well.

    S. Madill, Blacksmith, Founded in 1911 in Nanaimo BC

I just aquired a 009 I don't need or want, and called Seattle yesterday regarding that machine. I was told $260 per ton this week. Prices have dropped off pretty good here lately. Sadly she's worth alot more there than anywhere else.

    Linkbelt yarder

Well I just sat down and re-read this thread again and there is no doubt that I came off as arrogant and dismissive toward your yarder. I apologize for that right here and right now, and I enjoy every single picture posted in these threads and I sure don't want to offend anyone. I say things...

    Linkbelt yarder

My favorite machines are the big slacklines of the early 1970's- Skagit, Washington, Berger, and Madill. The Thunderbirds are just newer and faster, not half as big or powerful. Everybody now wants newer and faster I guess. 35MPH turn speed is really, really impressive with that Link-Belt!

    Linkbelt yarder

It's all good! I like yarders of all kinds and would enjoy watching your Link-Belt for a day. If it burns diesel I'm a fan. Sooner or later the Feds will make everybody conver thier yarders to solar-power or you'll be forced have a windmill on the gantry.

    Linkbelt yarder

He is right. After all, the Amish are still plowing with oxen, and some people enjoy logging with horses. I guess it just comes down to how much technology you choose to embrace, or not. One thing is for sure, my inbox fills up with people looking for swing yarders. I have 2 LS-98's (standard...

Thunderbird Yarders, Loaders, and Etc from the Murray's in Eugene Oregon

O.K. I just went through the archives here and found that issue- An 'Alaskan Loggers' Issue. Gildersleeve at Whale Pass, Campbell Const at Naukati, Keith Bloom at Marble Island, etc. I am 95% sure I had multiple copies of this issue, but I only find the one copy with my 1975 set. I cannot...

    Loaders, Limbers and Roadbuilders.

How about those Beavers-- Any OSU fans out there? Thunderbird Logger custom-painted for Allen & Gibbons. There was to be a U of O Green/White/Yellow 'Ducks' twin to this machine but that never did materialize. I cannot imagine a better picture than 2 Eugene, Oregon-built logging machines...

    Loaders, Limbers and Roadbuilders.

I've seen them get 30,000 and I know 2 loggers now who still use 30,000+ hour Kobelco's for backspar, tailhold, and cleanup duty. I know another logger using a 30,000 hour 4300 Quantum loading under his yarder everyday. Lots of old iron still around- just depends on who was in the seat for those...
