Case 188 in 480C near end of life maybe.

Last year, I was on this forum and received a ton of help after my injection pump gave me a headache. The motor ran quite well for its age before problem, tired but strong enough for what I need. During the pain of having a rebuild and then a check that the pump (or I) hadn't gone goofy, I...

    Case 188 Pump Timing.

The ol' beastie is running again, wonderful it is. Just goofed one tiny thing. I installed the pump gear at TDC. Lovely, shaft pointed to 5:00 as PG said. Then I forgot to move motor to 8deg BTDC when I timed the pump. Is this a bad thing ?

    Case 188 Pump Timing.

Could be it !! Today I removed the pump drive gear and the sheer pin had done its job and sheered, just to cause me an amazing amount of grief over two months and one day, but who's counting Of course, the stub of the pin is to be yet removed and a new pin found, prolly fab on from a drill shank...

    Case 188 Pump Timing.

Massive. Thanks Tinkerer. I recon the roll pin/woodruff key has gone AWOL. The pix indicate that when #1 is TDC firing, then the pump drive shaft is vertical which would account for mine being 120 odd degrees off.

    Case 188 Pump Timing.

Now my head's spinning as I se someone posting (on another site) that #1 cylinder is at the back of the engine, flywheel end.......gnnnnnrrr

    Case 188 Pump Timing.

I cannot find definitive info re timing Stanadyne pump on this motor. Main sources say that when #1 cylinder is a 8deg BTDC firing stroke, the lines in the window on the pump should line up. Well having battled this motor pooping out a couple of months back and getting the pump rebuilt and...

    Roosa DBGFCC 431 63AJ snag

Got pump back looking really pretty. $1000 after having spent money on parts followed by a $700 rebuild. Installed, bled. NO FIRE !! No fuel in return line, what's that about ? Frustrated to hell and back.... Considered new injectors for $140 to discover these Case 188 injectors need a $160...

    Roosa DBGFCC 431 63AJ snag

Think I end my amateur affection with this pump and take it to the professionals, much like what was advised straight away after I posted my problem. Tell ya, it has been classic frustrating fun !! Took the engine cover and the air cleaner off today in order to give injectors etc a good cleaning...

    Roosa DBGFCC 431 63AJ snag

When I try starting, the engine lopes sounding like one cylinder might be interested. Will check return pipe for fuel, nothing showed on return line to pump. Thanks for the reply JimG.

    Roosa DBGFCC 431 63AJ snag

I've rebuilt the pump with new cage, weighs and thrust sleeve. Didn't see anything untoward inside. Didn't mess with the leaf spring. Installed pump, (fun) Now have fuel to the injectors. But no fire, not even a whiff of smoke !! Any clues as to where to look next please.

    Roosa DBGFCC 431 63AJ snag

Thanks Pump Guy, Here's some snaps. I forgot to mention the bent cage btw. I have seen there's an option for the cage that is solid, would that be a good way to go ? Sometimes one can be stuck for choice when it comes to these kinds of repair. I wish I had the money to employ a pump person, but...

    Roosa DBGFCC 431 63AJ snag

This pumps is on a Case 480C with 188 motor. Apart from the rest of the saga where I got stuck nearly falling off a bank, the motor stopped running. After much messing with the pump/fuel delivery/lack of fuel to injectors, I came to the conclusion the pump has something wrong. Seeing they go...
