    980G No 3rd gear?

Running it a bit more…. The machine only has 2nd gear fwd/rev. 4th gear it just revs out, no movement. Pressure on P1 and P2 were in spec for second gear. It doesn’t change until you go to 4th then it drops to 0 in 4th. My next move was to pull the valve body and see if there is any spools...

    980G No 3rd gear?

Tried doing some solenoid swaps today. No dice still no 3rd or 4th gear. When in 3rd on the display it says 3 but actually it’s in second. And the machine jerks slightly when you put it in 4th fwd/rev but doesn’t move at all when you give it throttle. Pulled the screen again today. Had a few...

    980G No 3rd gear?

I can try swapping the solenoids. Losing 3rd & 4th gear now has me kinda thinking it’s something internal. But swapping solenoids to verify is cheaper than an unneeded overhaul.

    980G No 3rd gear?

Pulled the screen out today. Didn’t look like the one pictured above. In the picture I took… cleaned the screen with brake clean dried it out and tapped it off into the clean pan (green one in picture) there is some debris in there. More than you would normally see when you pull the screen...

    980G No 3rd gear?

It might be high enough. I’m going to go work on it tomorrow. I’ll compare the height of where the screen is to the oil level in the gauge. I’m thinking I’ll have to drain at least a few gallons. I know the screen isn’t in the greatest most accessible spot so I’d hate to get a bath while...

    980G No 3rd gear?

That’s what I was scratching my head about too. I thought maybe a piston seal for one of the clutches. That you would see checking pressure possibly, I just couldn’t remember the procedure. I will def check the screen first

    980G No 3rd gear?

That may not be a bad idea… Maybe I’ll drain the oil and pull the screen out. I have no active codes just one from about 100 hrs ago pertaining to the 4th speed clutch. Only happened 1 time… 100 hrs or so ago 1403.05

    980G No 3rd gear?

980G AWH Auto shifts 1-2 no problem, display says it goes into 3rd but trans stays in second. Switch to manual mode… trans says it’s in 3rd but is for sure in second. Goes manually into 4th. What am I looking for when I check pressures. I cant remember the procedure. Was also going to swap...

    Cat 375 Boom settles

On our Cat 375 (1JM prefix) the operator is complaining of the boom settling down after you let go of the control lever (neutral). With the boom up and the bucket off the ground, you can watch it slowly settle to the ground. Any obvious things to check for? The boom cylinders were both...

Volvo L350F broken exhaust valve springs…

Here are the backside of those pistons. They all appear to be in good shape and haven’t loosened. You can see the factory peen/spot weld marks.

Volvo L350F broken exhaust valve springs…

Okay I did see the holes on the top of the pistons where you could put say the pins of a spanner wrench. I’ll pull them out and make sure they didn’t loosen up for some reason. That would make sense if they did loosen and you would loose your lash.

Volvo L350F broken exhaust valve springs…

I did have the pistons out of them today to take a look at them. Mostly paying attention to the bores and the part that contacts the bridge. Are you saying disassemble the piston assembly after you pull them from the rocker? Or check the one the smaller arm contacts. You can see part of it in...

Volvo L350F broken exhaust valve springs…

Here are a few pictures of the damage. Luckily the valves stayed in place and everything looks good piston/block-wise. My dealer did provide a few bulletins for valve springs. I’ll have to find out what the head rebuilder used.

Volvo L350F broken exhaust valve springs…

Rockers and shaft were replaced during the overhaul because of wear from dust contamination. (Motor was dusted which is why it was overhauled) It has the T style bridges with the pin. Do you have any reference numbers to any bulletins by chance?

Volvo L350F broken exhaust valve springs…

It does have the I-EGR double rockers. The procedure was followed by the book when the overhead was done. I will check into see if there were updates.

Volvo L350F broken exhaust valve springs…

The engine was overhauled a few months ago, has around 100 hrs on the overhaul. Operator said they noticed a slight ticking noise. Pulled the valve cover the next day and to my surprise. There were 8 broken outer exhaust valve springs! Luckily the inner spring was still holding them in place...

    Volvo L350F overheats… cooling fan doesn’t spin

Yes that solenoid solved the problem.

    Volvo L350F overheats… cooling fan doesn’t spin

Just a quick update. I got it going today. I ended up changing the pressure solenoid in the central valve that controls the fan and it’s speed. Brake pressures all checked out. Fan pressure was good as well after the new solenoid was put in.

    Volvo L350F overheats… cooling fan doesn’t spin

That was one of the things I was going to try next. I’ll keep you updated on my findings.

    Volvo L350F overheats… cooling fan doesn’t spin

Our L350F got hot today. Went to check it out, had codes for high charge air temp and high coolant temp. Fired it up and noticed the cooling fan not spinning at all. Also has code 1048-7 that comes up briefly when the engine is running that has to do with brake charge pressure. The fan will...
