Link Belt LS 2650 Starting Issue

Hi Guys,

We've got a 1984 Link Belt LS 2650 with an Isuzu engine that has a starting issue. The machine is around the 10k hour bracket, it doesn't smoke, and doesn't use any oil. However, when you go to start it, it turns over and just when it's about to fire it dies off. If you give it the slightest sniff of ether you can get out of the can it takes off. Even in real cold temperatures, with ether of course, it takes right off.

It seemed like the fuel was bleeding off, but we checked the pressure and it's right where it's supposed to be. The machine can be running, then shut off, try to restart it when it's hot and it'll do the same thing. On the other hand sometimes I've had it shut off, came back anywhere from 2-4 hours later and it takes off without ether.

Additionally, the motor will sometimes bog down when you overload it. At first we thought maybe these two issues were related and it was because of the fuel pressure. Possibly still related because of fuel in another way?

We are running out of guesses and are looking for some advice. Has anyone else ran into a similar problem with a machine, or have any suggestions?

Thank you,

Nolan

What model Isuzu do you have in it? Seems like you have something clogging inlet .Some Isuzu engine have strainer filter in the banjo bolt inlet a the filter housing and at the lift pum inlet.

Too bad he never posted back. I have the same engine with the same issue. Cold starts by itself warm needs the tiniest amount of ether and hot it will not start for anything. I am thinking it's the injection pump anyone with experience with these?

Genius, if only the masochistic Japanese engineers had thought of removing the screens. Wonder why they were removed? there's a water separator/sediment bowl with a screen before the banjo bolt screen so the banjo should never plug up, right? Nobody would ever mess up that sediment bowl would they?

Just messin with you a little. I don't think that's actually the problem, but might as well fix it.

Do you have a priming pump on an inline pump? have you tried priming the system before cranking when it's hot? a cracked rubber hose letting a little air leak in when hot will do what's described. otherwise a worn fuel pump would too, but that's not as likely. put a fan on the pump and see if it starts right up in an hour, if there's no rubber lines.

Wait! if there's a water separator, those things are terrible for leaking air, THAT'S why Jethro removed the whole thing, or should have?

Those separators had an O ring in the metal head that had a habit of falling out when you removed the clear jar.

I had the same issue with my Cat 330CL . would start on a frosty day but most times during the summer when the temp was up it wouldn't start, a small shot of either and away to got . come back again and fire right up . Discovered that the C9 Cat engine got two cam timing sensors and one was bad . took one out of an old 3126 and never had a minutes trouble after . I would check cam timing sensors .

Those banjo bolt screens were both a lifesaver and sometimes a problem if not regularly cleaned but I experienced Hitachi as a boy with every problem in the book. Sometimes you can find a 200mm grass / twig in the lines caught in the screen
