D5g problems

Got a customer with a D5g serial # mhk09814, don’t know much history on it.
Several months back he was clearing a small patch of timber for a house pad and it died and wouldn’t start. I changed fuel filter, blew out fuel lines, blew out return line, and it fired right up and ran great.
It’s done that 3 times since then, just dies. Sometimes it cranks right back up, but will only idle or is real sluggish. Fuel filter always seems to get it going. So last time it happened, I drained the tank, cleaned it out good, blew all the lines clear again, new filter etc.
Now he’s working about 4 hrs away snd it’s done it again. Does anyone know what the fuel pressure should be? It’s got the little electric pump, and I’m leaning towards that pump being the problem. Has anyone had similar problems with there pump? I tried to find the specs on fuel pressure in my manual, but couldn’t find it. My manual is showing the nippendenso injection style fuel system, but this tractor has tge round distribution type injection pump.
thanks

Hi, thanks for the reply Nige. No I haven’t come across a screen. Is it located on the electric transfer pump inlet? And thanks for the pressure specs, that will give me a place to start.
The first couple times this happened, I didn’t think much about it, snd just figured it was trash/bad fuel. But now that it’s happened again and I already cleaned out tank and lines previously, I’m leaning towards pump/pressure problem. Customer said he’s only burnt approx half tank of fuel since last time it happened

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
I found it mentioned in the attached pressure test procedure Step 3. Part of the inlet fitting on the transfer pump maybe.? It may be that the manual is wrong but I thought it was worth checking.

Thanks Nige, I’ll definitely look for it. I tried opening the pdf you linked, but I just get a blank page. Maybe my iPad don’t like me today :)

edit: it opened on my computer. Thanks!!

I have had the same problem it’s probably the fuel shut off solenoid ,the strainer you are looking for is under the solenoid and you will have to get the solenoid from cat or leave the little screen out. As best I recall

Thanks shopguy. I’ve got to get a few other parts ordered , I’m gonna see if they have that little filter. I just looked at an exploded view of parts diaphragm. I’m not sure yet what day I’m making the trip to machine. Prob fri, the guy said it’s 2 miles back in the woods snd he’s gotta carry me in with a atv . Should be fun. I’m hoping to change fuel filter and get it started to atleast road it out to my truck.

Sounds like you are on the right path. However I'd always be skeptical of the fuel source. Is his diesel transfer tank full of crap and or mixed with water? Worth taking a look at his source. Happy Backwoods Repair! Run if you hear banjos

yeah hes real bad about not topping tank off. I tried telling him its better to fill tank after using dozer for the day, but i guess he prefers to run it till its empty. Back when i had to clean tank out, it had a ton of crud, rust, scale and just plain dirt it looked like in there. Spent half a day flushing tank, then using a shop vac. That was several months back, and i guess its done good till this deal came up. Guess ill see when i make the trip.
The electric fuel pump dont have a primer pump on it.
The injection pump is the round head, kinda like a roosa master pump, instead of the inline style cat injection pump.
I tried to find something on timing engine to pull injection pump, etc online, but couldnt find anything for this style inj pump. Hopefully thats not the problem anyway.
Im leaning towards the electric pump being the culprit, but will see what the fuel pressure shows.
Thanks for the help

Don’t worry about the little filter, you can blow it out check the solenoid it should set code 166 if it is it.

Finally made the trip to Beaumont yesterday to look at dozer. That was a longgggg day. Ended up getting the Polaris side by side stuck on the way into the swamp, had to walk nearly 2 miles out. Borrowed a neighbor landowners Yamaha rhino to try again.Made it to the dozer, and was able to change the fuel filter, and get dozer cranked and it made the 2 mile trip back to the truck, barely.
Checked fuel pressure when I finally got back to truck and had 6 psi at idle and it dropped to 4 psi at full throttle. So I’m going to get a new electric fuel pump ordered today. Atleast that’s a easy job, just a long drive. Was 422 miles round trip. Guess I can’t complain though, he’s a good paying customer. Prob head back down there Monday to change it out
