I'm curious what everyone thinks a 2001 Case 550H with 26"LGP tracks on it is worth? Just over 4k hours on it. Six-way blade and 3 shank ripper on the back of it. Overall in very good condition. Ran it this past fall and seems to run well. I know it is a little on the small side but it can do all of the jobs I need it to do. Guy that owns it really needs to get rid of it per his bankers demand so I am in the driver's seat a little bit. Any things to really look for in specific?

Thanks,
Craig

I see them priced from 15 to 40 grand. My .02 , I wouldn't put much over 20 in it due to the age and hours. The hours aren't bad but its likely due an undercarriage or at least some u/c work. 850 can be had for the same money and I think is a better all around machine. I've said this before , if you like it and it suits your needs , and you buy it for what seems reasonable to you , then have at it.

I looked at 550H last year that only had 1,000 hrs on it and looked like new. The dozer had to have been stored in a barn to be so clean. Guy was asking $40k and think he got close to that from a contractor that had another one just like it.
As Dickjr said I would want to be at around $20-25 depending on undercarriage condition. I ended up with a 850 for just a little more than this and am really gld I got the bigger dozer.

Thanks Dickjr and JS300. I can buy it well under $20k (or I should say I did buy it over the weekend) so I have a little room to do repairs if needed. It did have some undercarriage work done on it last fall to the tune of about $4k but it wasn't a complete new undercarriage. Can't wait for spring now to put it to work...

Sounds like you got a good deal. Not sure if you have owned a dozer before but probably be a good idea to change the fluids and filters this winter so you have a good starting point going forward. You also might want to check for any bad or cracking hoses and leaking cylinders. Blown hoses and cylinders are fairly cheap fixes if caught early but can be expensive and time consuming if they go bad in the field, mainly due to the high cost of hydraulic oil. I would also check for slack in the spherical cylinder bearings and replace if needed. Other than that drop the pans and give it a good cleaning.
Case has really good parts break downs on thier website that come in handy. I always find the part I need Google the part # and then buy based on how fast I need the part.
Have fun with it.

I'd say you got a good buy sounds like. Hopefully the seller can get back on his feet , maybe pay you some rent on it if need be to keep going. Could be a win win for both parties. Post of some pics , I've seen 550's but we always like to look.

This is a picture from when we went to look at it last fall. My dad is operating it and the guy on the ground is the previous owner. I don't have any current ones because he has it in the shed and is going to leave it there until spring for me. We have a lot of road grime and salt from winter driving so I don't really want to move it home and get it full of salt residue.

Ok fellas, so I have had this dozer for a few years now and I have an issue that showed up last fall. When shifting from forward to reverse the machine didn't always want to shift like it should have. We had a small leak on the break master cylinder and thought maybe that was giving us an issue so we took it off and rebuilt it. We fired it up a couple weeks ago for this spring and we found out that didn't solve the issue. I did buy a service manual for it and there is a section that talks about CAS-2224 forward reverse guage block to adjust it. Has anyone ever done this? It doesn't appear like it is too terrible of a job per the service manual but sometimes things can seem like they will be easy and then you fight it the whole time. I don't have it apart but there is some linkage that goes from the shift lever down to the transmission. I am wondering if that may be part of my problem also. I'm wondering if maybe some of that linkage might be worn out and not allowing it to fully shift into gear. Any other ideas or tricks anyone has been around?

[/CITATION]
