Hey guys,

If someone can help looking up the serial number of a cat 312 that I just bought for me that would be great! I want to know the exact 312 model it is as there are several variations (B, C, BL, Dl, EL, CL, E, etc). Guy told me it was a 2004 cat 312 with serial number CBA01680.

Also, once I have the exact model it would be great if someone had the service manual on it. I need to know what fluids weights/type and filters go in it and service details.

thanks in advance!

Need to clear something up here........... There are three types of manual for your machine. It's important not to get confused between them.

1. What you call the "service manual" in your OP, Cat refer to as the Operation & Maintenance Manual. You can download a copy in pdf form from Cat for about $50. Amongst a load of other useful info it contains all the fluid specs/capacities plus preventive maintenance info, operating guidelines, etc, etc. If you want to look for a paper copy the Cat reference is SEBU7424.

2. Then there is the Parts Manual. Useful if you ever need parts for the machine, including things like filter part numbers. Again downloadable in pdf for somewhere around $100. Publication reference SEBP3833.

3. Lastly there is the Service Manual. This contains all the information necessary to service and repair every component on the machine. In paper form it's a book about 6" thick and retails at around $750 in paper or $425 on CD. Publication reference RENR5500.

Very good information, thank you!! Sounds like I would at least need the parts manual to get right filters and oil but likely need the full service manual at some point. Did not realize the full manual was that expensive.

Good way to look at it, thank you!

With dealer mechanic time currently invoiced at about $150/hr I'd call it cheap.
You'd save the purchase cost the first time you used it and would still be able to sell it later and likely get back what you paid for it.

if you are interested in downloading an O&M Manual, here's the process.

Go to https://catpublications.com/
When the popup appears click on "Continue as Guest".
Type SEBU7424 in the Search Box. The illustration below should appear. If you buy a paper or a CD version expect S&H costs on top of the price. The download is normally available in less than 5 minutes.

Same process works for the Parts Manual.

Hey man

is this the service manual that works with my cat 312cl? Seems like a good deal.

Here's a link to a paper Parts Manual. Latest update (SEBP3833-13) as well.

Can't see any O&M Manuals anywhere @ the moment.

Serivce Manual, but not far off the price of a new one. Note that it contains an O&M Manual (see the photos) .......... https://www.ebay.ca/i/302341242883

What kills the paper versions IMO are the S&H costs.

Ah, the famous USB manuals out of Eastern Europe.......
I have no personal experience of them but I seem to recall other posters on HEF being less than enthusiastic about their purchases. Can't remember the last time or I'd post a link.

Remember the prices quoted above and the old saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".
Ask yourself why the (allegedly) same pdf files copied on to a USB memory stick would only cost 15% of the price that is charged when they're burned on to a CD.?
