Since your union why not talk to the shop steward first? When I was teamsters it didn't do much but still, gotta follow the chain.

well, curly being that were the mainline paving crew for our area and we make him money on pretty much everything we do, sure your going to have a bad job here and there, but we usually make him money. i shouldnt have to go to the steward.

Call him on it. Every time he lies point it out to him. What does he lie about? If everyone knows he's a liar does it matter? If he lies to you he probably lies to everyone. So they know it. I don't see running to your Steward. What would you have him do? I will never understand the running to the Steward concept. I always figured a guy should stick up for himself.
I worked for a liar once. About the third time I caught him in one I gave them a weeks notice and walked away. Lifes to short to put up with a bunch of B. S. at work. You spend to much time there. I couldn't turn a switch at night and leave everything on the job. I'd go home in a mood and it was affecting my home life. Even though I had it made at the time, walking away was the best thing I ever did. Not telling you to quit. That was just the right thing for me to do. Good Luck with whatever you do!

Is he lying? or doing the usual corporate double talk to keep from giving you a straight answer?
Either way here's how it works for me.
We have a set hierarchy in the company I work for. For instance
Problem with a laborer or operator-report to foreman or super.
Problem with a foreman-report to super.
Problem with a super- report to general super or office.

If a problem with any employee on the site cannot be resolved with the super anybody can report to the general or office.

Being that you've been with these guys for such a long time I would think the company has at least some respect for the work you do for them. They should at least repsect your view and investigate the situation. Another thing to consider (and this I have done in my dealings with architects and owners' reps) get a digital recorder from Radio Shack for about $40.00.

Lashlander said it perfectly, I just quit a job like that where the boss was talking out his butt 95% of the time. I would go to talk to him about a job coming up and ask him what the plan was so I could get stuff lined up, well when I would question him on something that didn't seem like a good idea and offer an alternative he would talk down to me and say that my idea was stupid. Thats ok he is the "boss" but later that day when the customer would call and talk to him about the job he would tell the customer word for word what I or another guy would suggested to him. I quit Tuesday after putting up with his BS for 2 years, started Wed at a new job and can't tell you how much better I fell and act already. Oh yea did mention that I was his last employee besides his daughter (thats 18) :D he ran off 4 good guys that were at that branch longer than he has been with the company, oh well not my problem any more!!! :drinkup
(sorry for the long rant, although I fell better) Mike

I carry a Sony digital voice recorder for just that reason.
It's not much bigger than a Bic lighter, is easy to hide in a shirt pocket and records more than I could ever stand to hear.
I just upload it into my laptop when needed.
When it comes to covering your rear,
Ya gotta do what you gotta do.

Agree with lashlander
Had a boss like that, would lie even if the truth sounded better. Had enough one day and walked after 8 years. Best thing that ever happened. Next best thing was that I spent all my 401k and profit sharing from that job. At least I didnt lose it in the stock market like everyone else LOL!

We have moved on and now were lost....
In the last century a old bloke told me this

"the first three letters you learned at school were;
A= always
B= be
C= covered
so now I always keep a record usually in writing and recently bought me a digital recorder.
As I've said previously here I have gone back to school,(not for english spelliing, or punctuation) to study construction management/safety and the underlying trait that all my lecturers keep saying," keep a diary, and paper trail" ,most law cases are lost on technicality due to improper paper work, so figure.

Interesting thoughts stock. Im not sure what its like in other countries. From what I have learned, Here if you keep a daily journal, and write something in it every day, it is admissible in court. I try to keep a daily journal that includes Job, Hours, Miles from home to work, as that is a tax write off, Machines I ran, what i did, and any conversations that seemed important.

Had an instance a while back when I was a ganger we were putting in a compound beside a house, the home owner came back after 18mts with a claim so the company went to the foreman who went "Doh I dont know" so after a lot of head scratchin the G.F asked if anyone had a record ,the general operative told the G.F that, Stock (me) had a diary with times that he went to the head (polite version) and everyone else as well, so we had a chat gave him the info ,they spoke to the home owner and with my info the case was dropped.
the next job I was made a foreman and my previous f/m got holidays.
Still have my diaries 20 of'em , I think or more.
