The Monfort Lane!----------------------------Which became the Hammer Lane years later. Hammer Lane is a actual road off I-5 below Sacramento-there use to be a sign below it that said,
Not A Truck Route.

Monfort was know for big power years ago. Hauled meat out of Denver. Monfort stockyards.

I remember the Monfort lane but we had a union steward who carried the nickname of Monfort . He always had the "new" truck . Every one else drove his hand me downs and he was happy to tell you that .

Tiny, what in the world do you think they used the winch truck for? Can see nothing practical of that on a pile driver. While that little Chevy is cabled crosswise to something too.

To be honest , I don't know . I had 2 thoughts ... adding just enough weight to get the hammer and leads picked up .. Or a makeshift 3rd drum to pickup the piling .

There was only one of the 500 Americans that had a 3rd drum

The chevy is a complete mystery

Thought about a Pile lifter, but really made little functional sense although no third drum would be a reason.

All the Americans' I worked(All seven) were ex dragline or clam shovel handlers, all had a third drum, three were in quarries, three were barge situated and one used as a bank set dragline. Could have been added later but all had them.

Old 500 American load out story . Boss decided to leave the tracks wide and the counterweight on one that just moved around in town . Ours had no brakes to set , Had to use the travel locks to hold them . No room to do anything but this one slightly down hill spot . Operator we had didn't any time on an American and afterward I was pretty sure he didn't know how to spell American .

Dropped the neck off the trailer and spread out the blocks , Then waddled the ole machine on the blocks over the trailer . As normal i hooked the neck back up and raised the trailer to barely clear the ground to roll back a little in order to get this thing over the sweet spot to haul it . As it turned out he didn't set the travel locks and when the trailer rolled back he thought the crane was rolling . then yanked the travel lever in and went the wrong direction . Kicked the counterweight blocks out , hit the neck of the trailer .

When the noisy had stopped and the smoke cleared . Here this is sitting with the toes of the tracks 4 foot high on one end and the counterweight on the trailer deck . By the time we got it leveled back out another operator got there and it went pretty smooth .

82 Pete hauling a life flight chopper to have a major overhaul done .

Not to doubt you Tiny-but that Pete has quad square headlights. 1982 should have quad round headlights-where those changed or the whole hood changed.

Them {Monfort} and a company out of Seattle by the name of Far West. Far West had {only} W900AL's 48" sleepers painted all black with one thin gold stripe all powered by KTA 600's .
Those trucks not only looked fantastic but moved fantastic also.

I remember seeing those trucks(farwest) and wishing I had one. as for monfort those drivers lived up to their left lane legend at least on the pa. turnpike

I remember reading where some people were saying single vs dual stacks affects the torque and power output of the engine. Is there any truth to this? I would think as long as the exhaust is adequately sized for the engine it wouldn't make a lot of difference. The same as the air cleaner needs to flow enough CFM. Dual exhaust makes sense on large engines so you don't need a 12" dia. exhaust.

The later Far West rigs had a gold stripe, the early white stripes. Years ago I knew two Far West drivers.
