I noticed on the case parts order from they show thermostats for the case 580ck 188 diesel, g11065 177-182 degrees and a57641 180 degrees. It didn't say if it was for a diesel or not so my question is which thermostat does the unit take.
After I removed the thermostat and put it into a pan of hot water my thermostat didn't open til 190 degree. The reason I asked is because the radiator constantly overflows and the new coolant sending unit / temperature gauges are not working.
thanks Jerry

The parts book specifies A57641 - 180° You are good with a 190° if the cooling system is in good condition.
Are you overfilling the radiator ? There has to be room for the coolant to expand when it gets hot.
Is your temp gauge wired correctly and is are the two components a matched pair. What I mean is that a new sending should not be hooked to an old gauge.
Other than that they are not getting the required 12 volts to power them up.

Do you have a good rad cap? Many look the same but aren’t long enough to seal to the throat of the rad or the spring is too weak to prevent leaking under pressure.
My rad has an overflow spigot but no collection bottle. I might install some tubing and a Budweiser catch can.

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a 1970 case 580ck and have begun going through everything that needs attention. On the top of my list is to install a new temperature sensor to replace the one that has a broken sensor on the end of the wire. It was a mechanical one and I would like to replace it with a mechanical one. The problem is that I cannot locate where it was attached, since I found it hanging free. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Radiators get nasty with age inside & out. Yours may not shed heat effectively.
I have a local radiator shop, Roy takes VERY good care of me. Radiators routinely go off to him for a boil out.
My latest purchase, a 29 year old John Deere 410C overheated first use. It got a very thorough hot water pressure washing outside, and a auto supply boil out chemical inside. It now cools properly.

As for thermostats, they all keep you cool if they work. I'd choose a 210 degree thermo if I can get one. Keeping your engine quite warm when running drives away more moisture, resists sludge.
