so I tried to remove them by cleaning up the edges of the holes with a chisel and then pounded a square drive socket into the hole and tried to turn them out but all I ended up doing is rounding out the hole. So now I need to move it a mile back to the shop to be able to try and weld a nut onto it... the fun continues!

I usually walk them out with an air hammer if I can’t get them out with normal methods. If that doesn’t work then I weld a nut to them.

I suggest a section of heavy wall pipe or tubing as a guard around them. You’ll see this as a factory method on machines.

Don't know if your aware but the D6/D5 uses the same final drive cover for both sides. That's why the extra drain plug (2). Switching sides puts the unused drain plug on the bottom. A lot of effort to get a working drain plug but can be done. Doesn't do anything for the wear on the steering clutch case portion though when it actually wears down into the bolt locations.
