Hello, we are looking to buy a used Cat 14M (CB9J00295) that have 13,000ish hours on it and I know that some series had more gremlins than other so advises are welcome!

If this serie is a good one, what should I look up to on these machines? Going to see it tomorrow

Thanks

Hmm.. 13000hrs, is it the original engine? and yes the M's have LOTS of gremlins, what are you planning to do with the machine?

Yes original engine. We plan to use it on the access road to a mine site, about 120km long. We would put on a snow plow equipment for the winter months.

Maintenance and repairs have been done by the Cat dealer from day 1 and was told that all upgrades have been done to.

13000 hrs on original engine, I would be alittle concerned no matter the maintenance and updates that has been done, I do realize that the 14m are a heavier built grader than a 140m but they share the same DNA, I would suspect its a c9 engine not sure in late 2007 model 14ms use the Huie pump system on that engine, you do not have the emissions of the newer models to contend with I suspect, my experience with m series without warranty is that a private company can be completely overwhelmed with problems and can easily be bankrupt you with down time and parts, so take caution, H series graders are more of a reliable choice if possible, that's about as honest opinion I can give you after dealing and using M series graders.

Ask them to list the upgrades that have been done to it. I’d be interested to see it. Either way it’s coming up close to time for an engine overhaul or a recon engine. All depends how many hours a year you’re going to be putting on it.

It’s a C11 EUI engine with mechanically-operated electronic injectors, so no HEUI issues to worry about.

Actually we have a coule of Volvo (Champion) G780 graders that are getting old and we are a bit tired of wrenching around the same problems over and over again so we would like to get a more rugged grader...this one were offered to us so that's the reason of this post.

Thank you guys for your inputs, I really appreciate it

As you pointed out the 14M is a completely different animal to the 140M. If (and that’s a big if) it’s had all the upgrades it should be half- way reasonable.

We had two 16M’s from that time frame and they both gave us fits until the bugs got sorted out and all the upgrades were done. 12 years later and they are still running with close to 60,000 hours on each of them.

So maybe a punt on an early M Series isn’t such a bad idea, so long as the above is taken into account.

She looks to be in great shape, does not look like it has the auto grease system, a couple of hoses hanging, those tires are great in the snow and ice they look close to new, screens on the rear engine doors, we have them and they work well keeping dust and little rocks out, the cab doors can be bad for rusting out so keep an eye on them, we had to replace ours, check all your bushings in your blade, ram cylinder cup bushings, and cylinder yoke and cup bushings for movement,(where the lift cylinder is attached and pivots) best of luck, keep us informed how she performs for you if you don't mind, thanks for sharing
