You may have a bad proximity switch locking out second gear. What's the serial number of the machine? Ill look at a schematic and see what's there. Don't condemn the shifter yet. Does the frame tilt move very slowly? Regardless of if the boom is under 20 degrees or not?

0160033895. this is an auction buy i have not done a lot of checking yet` but tilt does seem a little slow and the tracking is a little wonky. showing roughly 4700 hrs.

Okay-I verified the S/N. It's an 08 Legacy model. Boom angle switch doesn't appear to lock out the shifter. No forward or reverse in second gear?

I did some checking. The boom angle switch does not lock out any gear in the transmission. You can go to the JLG website and download the service manual-it has schematics for the transmission. You'll need to check voltage from the shifter at the solenoids on the transmission. You said you swapped shifters and had the same problem. If voltage is at the solenoids being applied make sure there's a ground for all as well. You may be able to ohm each solenoid to see if you have a bad one. Then maybe swap some around and see if second gear starts working. You'll have to do some digging to find the issue.

appreciate your help . im going to download the parts of the manual i need and see what i can find there .from just looking i don`t see any interchangable sels. only 4 wires going in from a 9 wire switch. something tells me we have more than an electrical problem
