So from what I've read. It's likely and early 60's HD cab 849. Looking at the pics, I see the shifter is still there so it may still have a transmission. I think the hood is gone. Repowering it wouldn't be the issue. Finding replacements for the missing parts is my concern. Especially being in the middle of Canada. If it was the West coast, I'd likely find the pieces needed. The fenders could probaly be saved. But how hard would the hood, rad, etc be to locate and prices?

If you have enough passion and ambition Anything is Possible. Personally I would keep walking past it unless you were going to use it for yard art.

Ehhhhh tough call. Some meat left on it, but its definitely a project.

Hope you can weld, turn a wrench, and be a sheet metal god.

My only thought would be trying to find an old C500 with a butterfly hood as a donor truck and if you're lucky the the engine / trans goes in easy, butterfly hood gets widened (forget the covers) / blended into the new truck. Recycle the radiator, etc. Torch the headlights off the 5 and weld em in or whatever is easiest.

Might find a decent deal on a vintage bed / winch / rig truck closer than BC

Old truck, lots of steel to weld and modify - just like the Hayes, Pacifics, Macks, etc. Just depends what you're after in terms of authenticity or aesthetics.

As far as finding genuine 848/49/50 replacements, I would say rare unless you head to the Coast and hunt around with a pocket full of cash, even then....

Lol. I have a great wife and I have a continually growing collection of yard art. I actuallly just bought three Mack B series tandems to save them from the scrapper. Two diesels and a gasser. One is suppose to be a rare B87. Also picked up 4 International R210(Red Diamonds) tandems(one with a real nice dump box and hoist) and a R190 single axle. I might grab the Kenworth K100 with the log loader in the pics. The 1960ish White cabover in the pics has a Cummins 250 and a Road Ranger RT- 910 tranny. I have a line on a free KW924 with a 8V71 that is missing the rear diffs I could use for the engine and maybe tranny for the 848/849. If I got the 848/849, it likely would be for free of very close to that. The farm is literally a 10 minute country road drive so I likely wouldn't even have to pay to haul it. Just use a loader or rig and the cost of fuel. The big question for me is whether the missing body parts can be found?? My other concern is what the truck would weigh in it's current state? We'd have to cross a single lane country bridge and I'm concerned about the weight of the truck and a loader towing it. Lastly, what would distinguish it as being an 848 and not a 849?

All the pics I find show it has 849 fenders, not 848. Again, I'm a newbie to these trucks. But I thought the 848's had the headlights in the front bumper??
I was talking with a diesel mechanic buddy of mine today and he said there is another one locally further north, used for snow plowing highways that is a 6x6.

I figured it was an early 60's 849 based on the small window cab and the fenders. I'm going back in a few days to clean the data plate on the dash and find out for sure. I get some more pics. Anyone want pics of anything specific? What do you guys estimate current weight at if it does still have the tranny? 20-25tons?

I'm not an expert on Kenworth's , but it looks to have a "Spring Steel Frame" 849 / 850 would have an "I Beam Frame" . The engine bonnet is not off set to the cab . And the rear hubs are not " Planatarie's " .

Thanks Camptramp. The only issue I have is that most of the 848's I've seen have different fenders with the headlights on the bumper. I've also seen many pics labelled as 849's with non planatery diffs and rims like this one. I tried cleaning the data tag with my hand when I took the pics but it had a film I couldn't get off in the time I had. I'm going to try and go back, clean it off and get the model and serial number. I'm also going to try and measure the frame. It definately was C channel and not I beam style. Reading through the thread the last few days, I remember someone had the ability to look the serial numbers up. Are they still here. Any guesses on weight as it sits?

Well, I guess I've come to terms with the fact it's destine for the scrappers. I checked on the single lane bridge and it's rated for 10 tons. I'd have to get it towed the long way to avoid that bridge and it would get too expensive for a truck that can't be made to run again. I would have loved to bring it home for yard art. But thanks to everyone for there opinions and advice. Especially, Skadill.

I have two 849 for parts and a running 850. The way you tell them apart is from what I found out is the frame rail width on the 848 is 34” looks like that’s what yours is. And the 849 has 40” wide rails flex frame the 850 is a 15” deep rigid Manufactured C frame 40” wide and has the offset cab. I’m not sure if I’m 100% right but that’s what I noticed. I parted with a fender to a fellow here. but the One truck still has them on And the hood. I’m on the west coast bc.
