Does anyone have experience shipping diesel engines overseas?

I am currently trying to purchase a volvo td102gc from a business in the UK. I have asked around on facebook about information on importing a volvo diesel and some questions came up about EPA labels. This one engine has a label that says it doesnt meet us or california standards, but goes on to say that it must be installed in a pre 1996 machine to avoid penalties. Has anyone shipped engines from England to the US before? If so what can i expect for lead times, fees, duties etc?

Can’t answer your question, but probably the best thing to do to get accurate information is to contact a US Customs office and ask them what is required, etc.

most likely there are import/export companies that would handle the procedure for you (at a cost, of course)

Actually the build date of the engine and the particular regulation that it has to meet for that time frame is what determines if it can come into the US. You have to prove the build date at the port when you try to pick it up. You aren't done at that point either, now someone other than you has to prove it meets those regulations with a manufacturer's tag. I used to see plenty of machines and engines in my business that people wanted to trade in to a dealer. If it doesn't meet the specs, it gets shipped back out of the country at your expense. All the risk is on you.

The manufacture date and the time frame of the regulations that fit the manufacture date that determines if you can bring it in. Not only that, you will have to have the manufacturer provide the tag with all the information that proves it meets those regulations. If you don't have the tag, the engine will be loaded back up and shipped out of the country at your expense.

I used to see a few machines with non conforming engines who were trying to trade the machines in on ones built in the US. I was required by the dealers to inform the potential customer of the error of their ways. No dealer was going to get saddled with the risk of all the fines plus having to box up the machine and ship it somewhere else.
