Hey i am new here, but a read a bunch and you guys have helped a lot of people out over the years.
So i am looking for some John Deere engine incite. I had a customer of mine blow a hole in his dozer engine, they low idled it overnight during one of are -40 winter nights up here in Alberta. Crank case breather froze up and unit pumped its oil out until it made a window in the block. So block was toast, the customer found a very low hour 4045 in a genset, around 1500hr. He said he looked on john Deere parts and the block numbers matched. I told him we could most likely make it work. So know i have both engines side by side. A couple key differences is are the head, injection pump, injectors, turbo, oil pan. Which is not a big deal we will send his head to get planed and checked. Injection pump will swap. But the main issue i am running into that i cant find answers on is. The genset engine does NOT have balance shafts in it. it appears the installed the bearings so they would block the oil holes for balance shafts. look for answers if i can still use this engine in its short block setup without balance shafts, or add balance shafts to the unit looking for your guys help thanks!
dozer SN is t0450hx927568
genset SN is CD4045L140114

The Genset engines live at 1800rpm, so they didn't get balancers. You should be able to run it without the balancer shafts, but it'll be a shaker at high RPM.

There is not a lot of information available to truly answer that question. What I do know is the the genset engine is a Saran France built engine and the 450's engine is Dubuque Iowa built engine. They will have different crankshafts. The 450 engine probably has a straight nose on the crank and the genset engine will have a tapered nose crankshaft. They may or may not protrude the same amount affecting pulley alignment as well as the type of pulley that would go on the front.

These engines also have different pistons, connecting rods, turbochargers and cylinder heads. Most likely due to horsepower differences since there is not a lot of load placed on a genset engine as compared to a dozer pushing a pile of dirt. So my gut tells me they are not interchangeable.
