Took my 50 gallon portable diesel tank to our bulk supplier and topped it off, it's a bit of a PITA to load and unload from my F250 even with the tractor. Long story short I'm buying an elevated 300 gallon tank from the same supplier which is about $1200 delivered complete with filter, hose, etc. Apparently everyone around here has the same idea, buy a bulk tank and fill it while prices are down. The supplier ran out of tanks and has another order in, should be about two weeks. I'm the third sale of the yet to be delivered tanks. Minimum fuel delivery is 150 gallons which is fine, I use about that much red diesel every 10 or 12 months. Delivered fuel price is about 20 cents higher than at the pump.

Since we're in a rural area, there isn't any competition that I'm aware of so this dealer basically can set prices without competitive pressure.

Not as low a price for us as in Texas, but still pretty good; Fuel delivery to the farm last week, 545 litres of dyed seasonal diesel .87 per litre
They messed up our instructions and only filled the one tank, came back this week to fill the second one 648 litres @.91
I normally have one tank for winter (Arctic fuel) the other for summer. Due to the lower prices I decided to fill both with Arctic fuel, and will treat both with Howe's.
We would normally expect to pay $1.20/litre or more for delivered diesel.
I bought a used tank just for gas, doing some repairs and improvements to it then will have to take it to town to fill, our supplier does not stock premium gas with no ethanol. Stopped at a Chevron station in town today to fill a few jerry cans. They carry 94 octane no ethanol $.97/litre, usually more like $1.40

So that's about $0.918 Canadian per gallon or about $0.65 US per gallon? Doing the conversions made my head hurt. I think I screwed up that calculation - it doesn't look right. When we took the motorhome to Alaska 15 years ago I was getting so confused about converting liters to US gallons I made a spreadsheet, I needed to know about how much fuel I needed to take on when I was using the high flow truck pumps.

While I was trying to fall asleep last night I kept thinking about maybe I should buy another tank and fill it with regular gas. I treat my diesel with Biobor JF and Sta-Bil for gas so the fuel stays 'fresh' for quite a long time. It's really not about saving money once you factor in the 1200 buck cost of the tank but I like to be prepared for as many different situations as possible.

You just stirred up my brain on the price and amount of fuel in Canadian numbers. They are using liters which is close to a US quart. In my mind then .87 per liter would be something like 3.48 per gallon Canadian. The .91 cost would figure at close to 3.64 per US gallon. Does that sound right?

That sounds better, I think I divided instead of multiplying. If I was better at math i would have been in engineering for a career instead of a dogsbody ;).

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
3.85 litres per US gallon. is the conversion.

May hay fast boys. Crude oil prices are up almost 50% in the last couple of days. That jump should soon start to appear at the pumps. The chart below is West Texas Intermediate over the last month. It basically took off from a low of $20.34 since Thursday because it appears as though the spat between the Saudis & the Russians regarding production levels is close to being resolved. Now sitting at $28.34 a barrel.

We have had bulk tanks for more than 25 years. Between two farmsteads we can store 40,000gal. most of the time you can save a fair amount of money if you fill at the right time. Sometimes it bites you. LOL. Seams like at least once or twice a year there is a low in the fuel price.
Just the savings alone from buying 300-500 gal at a time to buying a tanker load, 8,000-9,000 at a time can be more than $.20.

I'm not buying a tank just for the low fuel price but mostly for convenience. Low fuel cost is just a bonus, I've thought about buying a tank for years. This was just the incentive.
