Next thing we’re gonna hear is that the number 4 injector failure caused the oil consumption due to the tip blowing off the injector and scoring # 4 cylinder. Just a wild guess.

Well checked the oil this morning and is still on the full mark, went through 402 litres of fuel yesterday, not sure why this engine is doing this, it seems just all of a sudden it starts going through oil then stops, is this how a new engine breaks in? we will keep watching, not sure what is next, but with the bad experience we had have with the 140m's I am superstitious, i'm thinking this engine will torture us.

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
Don't give them the daily usage figures, just give them the gallons of oil / gallons fuel figure over weeks or a month and hopefully you can get satisfaction that way....
Average the fuel vs oil added figures over a week/month if it helps to smooth out the "bumps in the road" that you might see in the daily data.

You do see exhaust smoke when going from forward into reverse and back again but never noticed any blue smoke or smelled a hint of oil burning from the exhaust fumes.

Nige, could the inconsistency of usage possibly indicate a crankcase ventilation problem that comes and goes?

I'm struggling with the idea that there's excessive oil going past the piston rings one day and not the next.

I have seen an issue like that with valve guides. Working a lot of hills can leave oil sitting on top of the head at times and slows down the drain back to the crankcase. Does this machine have a positive crankcase ventilation and a filter?

That is more than I could tell you, I will ask the mobile.

Well here's a update, as for the burning oil issue the engine seems to take spells in oil usage good for about 500L of fuel than drop 3 Litres of oil on the next 250L of fuel used, currently our machine is out off service with our next issue, blown manifold gasket, turned every thing black in the engine compartment, partner did not notice it where he was out on shift at night ice blading, wasn't till he got back to the shop that he noticed all the panels were black,... guy's this is only the start of a long and tortures road ahead with this new engine.

Ok guy's here's a update on the new engine, after the first 250hrs service the engine went through a little over 4.5 gallons of oil, the engine now has seemed to settle out on using oil but grading season is coming and the operator on the machine for the summer pushes the machine hard to say the least, don't have the amount of fuel burnt to oil yet but working on it.

Imperial gallons? Darn near a pail. Does seem like a lot. I guess the other operator pushing it a bit would help seat the rings, if that is the issue.

Yep, a little over 20 liters, I would say that's a lot on a new engine, my 140H is nearing 14000 hrs and may go through a litre of oil every other day when pushed.

I know when they put a new engine in the Volvo, it had high blowby and oil consumption for quite a while. It’s 7 years ago, so my memory is vague. I think it was maybe 5-600 hours. Once it sealed up the, it consumed nothing and there was no blowby at all. Western rep wanted it beat on pretty hard during break in (within reason).

I was wondering before what CAT would have done with the cylinders in that being as they are cast into the C7 block. I know repair sleeves are available. I’m not sure if oversize pistons and rings are available. Is it possible they just got a hone and new pistons? If so, it’ll take a bit longer to break in.

Well here's another update, we still have the oil problem, comes and goes, this morning the operator checked the oil was on the full mark, ran the machine to the shop to do a PM on the machine around 30 miles of roading, when he got to the shop the oil level was below the add mark, also we noticed on the side of the motor there is a engine vent hose, the area below the hose was completely saturated in oil, to add misery to this situation the vent on the tranny fill tube is also pushing tranny oil out, the trans level is in the middle of the hatch marks so its not over filled, unbelievable! I am presently running a 140m2 for the last month while my baby is getting a paint job, the machine is a 2016-17 and on its third engine c9, 7200 hrs on the machine, the motor has not gone down on oil in a month but has gone through 3 injectors in the last year, replaced one last week, got to love the M's.
