And I don't think I'd do it that way agin! Had 7 file drawers I had mounted in the shop, to put some of the mess in(got 'em at auction fer a dollar!). Problem is, they gots no top or bottom, and the birds(swallows) and bees(wasps, mainly) likes to nest in the nooks and crannies. So, figgers me, I'll take some sheet metal, and make a pest blockin shield fer the bottom...

Needed something like 20 inches wide, so I looked up the price of a roll of flashing $50! So I figgers I can beat that! Gotta old file cabinet fer $25, about 3 miles from home. Cut it up with a harbor freight steel cutting circular saw blade($18), it did a pretty good job. OK, why TF is this thing not falling into the pieces I just cut outta it? Frame was spot welded to sides, and drawer slides, with about 25 spot welds per side!

So I cut and I ground, and cut and ground, fer about an hour a side, to get the flat metal I needed. Another hour of clamping, and buzzing in about 16 sdst sheet metal screws, and the bottom is done. Now alls I needs is some free boards fer to cover up the tops! (i gots a line on some, on CL, only a few miles from home...!) I guess I'll find out how much I spend on the "free" tops, when I cross that bridge...;)

You all know how thin these cheap cattle troughs are....68351274-56F6-4E8A-8125-19FDC54918BC.jpeg so there are a bunch around here. One day the local welder was around and it was wet and I got volunteered to help cut the rust out the legs and make freakish looking Frankenstein troughs because cows do not generally value vanity at meal time like some humans. We are having to run wire off a welding truck and then I was even doing some Texas TIG adding in welding rods to keep up with the rust. We were having to take two and three troughs to make one really hideous functional one. Dad drove out to check the progress in the rain. “Looks great!” says he, “How” I ask, “you are paying $100/hour to rebuild troughs that are worth $150 new”. We ended up with four maybe rebuilt and a pile of scrap that was literally identical to one of the old bone yards if the cows had been made of metal. I know how you feel. We all have had this lesson at some point. If you are like me you will ignore that feeling you have that this is not going to turn out right and try it never the less once a year for good measure. I call this the baby bird hallucination....”cheap cheap cheap”. But we still do it.

First thing I looked at was the grain structure in the doorknob cut out. This one is oriented strand board. No rain in the building, so most it can do is to swell a little(I hope!)
