No pictures, but not good news. Two rod bearings hammered out. Crank is heavily damaged. Main bearing spun in the block. I'm sure the bearings were bad enough that there is probably head damage from the pistons hitting them as well, but I told them to not even pull it down any further. Would likely have to line bore the block.

With all the steel in the system, who knows what damage there is to the cam/ geartrain. Engine builder would go further if I wanted him to, but is really concerned with all the damage.

Reman engine is probably going to come from liebherr, just have to sort out the paperwork. Air freight from Germany. Liebherr doesn't core charge, they offer a up to 30% refund off the price of the new engine, depending on the condition of the engine I send to them. Most likely it won't be worth the freight to send mine to virginia. But who knows?

So- Merry Christmas everyone, we've had a great year, and I've got all kinds of work stacked up for the 100 ton next year when I get it back together. I'm really thankful that the motor didn't go down two weeks after I owned it. At least this way it has made enough to pay for its repairs, though I'll admit its going to sting a little. As long as the phone keeps ringing, we'll keep going!

Well like you said it ain’t good news but at least you’ve got a direction to head now and can just bear down and start paying for it.
Merry Christmas to all.

That really sucks! I'm guessing the new engine will have some Murphy gauges or something to shut the engine off in case of low oil pressure or overheating. Really surprised it didn't have something from the factory. Good thing you have lots of work lined up and it's not your only crane. There are some horror stories where an owner/operator had their only machine go down through no vault of their own and took a long time to get sorted out.

Hated to hear that major bad news, but life goes on and ones has to accept the good along with the bad. Hope 2020 is an awesome year for you and lots of work for 100 T makes it all the worth owning the machine.

Well it was about 70 deg here on christmas day. Here's the whole clan, and I and the kids are all currently driving the same series of Ford trucks, so what better than a group picture.

Left to right 1992 Superduty 460, 5speed 2 wheel drive, flatbed

1994 f150 300 six, 5 speed 2 wheel drive shortbox (my son, freshman in college)

1997 f250 351, auto, 4 wheel drive longbox (youngest daughter, junior in high school)

1995 f150, 302. auto, 2 wheel drive longbox (oldest daughter, junior in college)

Wife doesn't get her own wheels in the picture, she drives a honda built in canada, so- no foreign built allowed:).

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
That news is absolutely crushing to hear. I’m kinda surprised it doesn’t have a low oil pressure shut down, or is that just wishful thinking on my part and not really a thing? Again, sorry you have to go through this, after following your posts though I have no doubt that you’ll get it sorted, hopefully for less than some of the numbers you posted.....
The problem with a shutdown is that it’s taking control away from the operator if it tries to shut off the engine (for good reason or not) while the crane is barrelling down the road. That’s not too clever imho, could land in the canal just like the other one did.

Although it would be nice if it had warning lights and a siren in the cab(s) to warn of impending disaster. The fact it apparently doesn’t kinda surprises me.

Well when it rains it pours...

70 ton on my way to a job yesterday, I think cracked a head. Fortunately, I've got a 6v92 hid away in the back corner of the shop. Its just with the 100 ton down, and no engine delivered for it yet, and now the 70 ton down .

Still have to rebuild the telescope cylinder in my 35 ton and the new little 40 ton isn't ready yet. The stack of things needing fixed is piling up.

That would drive an old mare to bite her colt.
Good luck with it.
You could be spending more quality time with your boom truck.

Man oh man. This run of misfortune you are having could drive a fellow to alcohol abuse and a generally disagreeable disposition.
"abuse"? Not sure what that means, leave the "ab" out and then that makes more sense!

Not sure if I'm glad or happy to be a bit over 1,000 miles away! If I was too close I might be tempted to stop in and see if I could help!
