'Morning my friends. Got a Gehl 5625, SN# 8562, with a head cracked between the prechambers and valves on a 4-154 Perkins. On the block, right side lower rear is stamped XA. Engine SN# stamped on left side front behind injection pump, A04-J13481U. Perkins says no heads available. Was asked repeatedly for build #, until I finally talked to an OLD guy, like me, who laughed and said that's the right #, that's just an OLD Perkins. So, my question to all of you is where can I find a head? I have tried most salvage yards around, Gehl dealers, and Massey dealers. Used good is fine. I've already got a used bad. Did hear of a place in Minnesota that will fix it, $1350, no warranty, and still would need valve job. Oh, and Perkins says there is 1 head gasket and 1 valve cover gasket left in the world. No intake or exhaust gaskets. And the price for those 2 gaskets will stop your heart...

Don't forget marine applications. There are a lot of Perkins Dealers along the coasts that do nothing but marine applications. Perkins are popular in boats

Thank you Guys. I promise I am using all these leads and suggestions. Some are out of stock, one will not help a private individual, some I'm waiting to hear back. Please keep thinking ! Thanks, Chuck

Early Bobcat 843's used a Perkins 4-154. They were used in a lot of applications. It would seem really odd that a head isn't available. Maybe call one of these places and they would be able to help you.

Thanks Dave. I have tried both of these places. No go. And the note about the 843's helps, gives me more options and another part number to ask for. So far, no one, no where has one. But I'm still looking...

I rebuilt my Perkins 4.154 about 8 years ago. Head was fine. Master engine rebuild kit was hard to find
and very expensive. This engine was used in lots of applications skid steers, chippers, trenchers, combines,
irrigation pumps, sailboats, etc. Try boatdiesel.com the forum there has excellent information about these engines.
When the old timer rebuilt my engine he said the perkins engine shares some parts and gaskets with the mazda
diesel pickup engine that was made in early eighties. The cracked head is a common problem. The national diesel rebuild
shops have bought up all usable parts for many years. Sometimes a used engine will show up on ebay but they are
pricey. There are a couple shops in the US that can make you a head gasket. Good luck.

my .02c. I rebuilt a 4-154-200 in a bobcat 843 years ago. Foley diesel (dr. diesel) in Massachusetts was a good source for perkins 154 parts. They weren't cheap but they had or could get most things. For gaskets and glow plugs and other common stuff- the Japanese 4-154 (which I had- and was referenced by the -200 suffix) was used in diesel Mazda trucks (B2200 if memory serves). most gaskets interchanged and were commonly available. My local engine machine shop was able to source bearings/rings etc by matching up the parts dimensionally.

If I recall correctly- it was very common to find surface cracks on the head surfaces near the pre-chamber and valves. Some required repair/replacement but a local Perkin GURU advise me that many smaller cracks, while not ideal, will not cause any adverse effects if left unaddressed.

My 154 had a spun rod bearing when I got it and once rebuilt, that thing ran like a champ. I always had minor oil leaks which drove me nuts- but I was told that with the older perkins, this was also fairly normal. Hope this helps.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but Im having a heck of a time finding my engine sn on my perkins 200 series 4.154 japanese in a 1989 Gehl 6625. Ive looked all over the left side of the engine around the injection pump.
Does the injector pump need to be removed to see it.I did find this but no numbers.

I need a valve cover gasket too. Local guys said the need the number & parts are a pita to find.

thanks in advance.

Engine SN# is behind the injection pump. You will be able to read most of it with a flashlight and mirror. I got all of mine by snapping pictures with my phone. I could get it in where I couldnt see. Good luck on the gasket. I found none for mine...

If I use a 4-154 parts manual, I come up with a perkins head #89180.

That googles out.View attachment 202229 View attachment 202230
Heymccall,
I'm new to threads and diesel's in general. Though i've owned my Gehl 6625sx for a number of years I've never had to work on it. I own just a few acres and have it to for personal use. The problem is it's very hard to start, I've talked to a few guys and they say I should try changing the glow plugs. It cranks but won't turn over. I heated the engine with a torpedo heater, while tarped, for about 6 hours on a 50 degree day and it started. I can't even find a part number in my Gehl manuals for the glow plugs? Is there a Perkins manual that would show me how to do this? Do you have any other recommendations? I've Googled around but not having much luck. Any help is appreciated.

Matthew-

glow plugs are easy to check. Before replacing them, VERIFY that they are getting 12v when you activate them. If they are, then you need to check if each glow plug is good by disconnecting the wire going to each one and running an impedance check (ohms) from the wire post on each glow plug to the engines block ( good ground). If you see anywhere between .3- 7.5 ohms, the glow plug is likely good. If you see no resistance or very high impedance (100ohms- infinity), then that glow plug should be replaced.

They screw out like a spark plug BUT- sometimes, they can be a real bear to get out and you don't want to break one in the head or you'll have a much bigger problem. I would recommend getting the engine started and letting the head get nice and hot, then trying to remove the glow plugs (being careful not burn yourself in the process). If they start to come out then bind, the glow plug end may have swelled up and be binding in the hole on the way out (not good). You can try screwing it back in a little (not tightened) to get some clearance, and spraying some PB blaster down the threads a few times and try it again. Repeat the process working the plug out hopefully without breaking the tip off. Or- you could get someone more experienced to give you a hand.

If the engine is the 4-154-200 (Japanese version)- I believe Rock Auto had glow plugs from an 82-84 Mazda B2200 diesel pickup that fit this engine (NGK y107r). Good luck but before ordering- make sure 1) they getting voltage and 2) that they are burnt out - or your just throwing your money away.
