Anyone ever tried to pull a dump truck pup trailer with a CTL? Thinking I could build a pintle hitch on a quick attach plate and dump with the auxiliary’s. My concern is releasing the air brakes and the leverage pulling up on the front of the machine. I have a fair amount of dirt to move around my land but don’t want the hassle of having to keep a dump truck running.

Any ideas?

If you're buying a dump trailer, get one you can pull behind your truck instead. They make them with gooseneck hitch and dual tandem axles or tri-axle. Should be able to move 5 yards a trip or so across your property with your truck.

Otherwise, I think you're opening a can of worms trying to pull a 10,000lb. (empty) pup trailer behind a CTL. Drive pumps and motors are not designed with tow ratings in mind and most machines are crazy expensive to replace if once they fail.

I know you said you didn't want a dump truck, but have you looked at prices on late 80's or 90's ex-municipal dump trucks? I bought one a year ago, I have $6500 into purchase price and a couple repairs and it is a handy as a pocket on a shirt. Pair that with a CTL and you can accomplish quite a bit of work in a short period of time. Just the other day, working by myself, I was able to load 3 loads (7 yards each) of sand on my truck from one part of the property, haul it to another part, and get it all spread and graded out in under an hour. Not huge production rate, but reasonable and cheap to do.

Just a thought anyways. Those old single axle dumps are quite prevalent and cheap. For the cost of repairs on a CTL drive system, you could own your own dump truck.

Small older Municipal diesel truck with air brakes will likely outlast YOU. Trailers are hardly worth the effort where a CTL is NOT designed as a tow vehicle especially with one of these loaded.

Cool thanks for the reply I’ve had a couple of single axle 6-8 yard trucks in the past. If I buy a truck it’ll be an older tandem this time. The idea of a dump trailer behind truck is out they’re just built to light for dirt in my experience and you’ll tear up a one ton quick dragging one off road.

I agree on the smaller dump trailers. They have a niche place, but in serious dirt moving they fall short.

I would have gone for a tandem myself, but stumbled on a deal I couldn't resist at the time. In hindsight, I could have waited longer and gotten a decent tandem truck for about the same money. My truck gets the job done, but it doesn't take much to get stuck off road in slippery conditions.

Tandems can be Hogs on Ice even with Power Dividers and Lockers, get enough surface area mud or turf loaded anything can slip.

I always wanted to build a gooseneck trailer for my skid steer that goes over the cab and into a ball on the back of the bucket it would dump using the loader arms that would be a much lighter weight design for hauling firewood though

Farm tractor pulling a pup would work or a old dump truck converted into a trailer much more power and speed than a ctl no worrys about the brakes if it even had spring brakes would they are very easy to disable

Still do not enjoy the use of Trailers behind ag tractors, I use a wagon but NO tongue weight as that gives a chance to reduce front end loading and potential for a flip backwards when climbing even a modest grade. Not sure why anyone would want to hang a trailer off a skid steer in any form, better off with a second transporter, these are not Belly Pan tractors designed to drag a growing load from behind or under a neck.

Started quite the conversation anyway lol. My idea was so I wouldn’t have to try to keep another engine running. I could load it with excavator pull it a couple hundred yards then push it back to the pit. My CTL is the nicest machine I own tho so I don’t want to tear it up. I guess I’ll keep looking for a truck I can buy cheap or trade something for.

LOL next you guys will say the D8 can't pull a disk because its only made to push just plain old nonsense
