Mack made the MB into a fire truck chassis, so brilliant in extending the early cabs then DELETING the cab tip over, had to access like a 1930s truck thru Dog House Hatches, SUCKED!!

Now that we are on the subject of fire trucks. This Mack is serial 1001 the first one made out of maybe two. It originally was bought and used by the Montecito Fire Dept in Calif.

I love those old K-models. Grew up in the 60's riding around in Grandad's K-10 (?) dumps and the Lowboy tractor burning tons of gasoline. He always said "if you are worried about the gas bill, you're not bidding the jobs right"
In '72 the K tandem tractor got replaced with a '52 Pete with a 262 Cummins... First big truck I got to drive... In the yard. :)

The old Reo Gold Comet trucks were very popular as ready mix trucks down here in Texas. I had one once, that we converted into a water truck. As I recall, ours had a big old International gas engine in it. I can not tell for sure what kind of gas engine this one has in the picture.

In high school I worked for a truck repair shop that had an old REO that looked just like that one with a huge old home built wrecker on the back. It was repowered with a Chevy 427, ran pretty good. Seems the story was it was originally powered with a 6V53 Detroit.

Does not look to be IHC power, more White in appearance, Two studs thru Valve Cover for tie downs. Holley 2bbl sitting sideways is different and seems to be leaking water everywhere or rain leaks.

Was it REO or White that could be ordered with a chevy engine?

I don't recall that option. REO made a pretty good V-8 of their own for awhile. I think it was around 440 CI and had a pretty good reputation. I think White used it too.
Then there was what they called the Giesel… a gas engine built on a diesel block. I think the base engine was the 504 Cummins V8, that would be a winner, Right?

I do remember that V8 in a Reo at one truck service I worked for, old truck was derelict and sat on a back lot but the engine was visible, gas and roughly the same appearance as a 504/555 with spark plug wires into the valve covers like a Hemi.

I do not remember a GM furnished engine.

That could be it. I have a 1967 construction magazine somewhere that has a 2 page REO?/Diamond REO ad with pics of that engine.
